I built a large sub for 4 12' JBL subs a few years ago. If I remember correctly-the pipe crosssection behind the driver needs to be 15 to 20% larger than the cone area and the terminus of the pipe should be the same area as the driver. Pipe length tuned to a 1/4 of the desired freq wave length.

That is classic design... doesn't work well.
Start by downloading Martin's alignment tables and the accompanying spreadsheet.
