Having very little knowledge about tubes yet owning a tube pre-amp, I need some advice, please. I purchased a used SL pre-amp a little more than a year ago. Not using my brain I left it on 24/7 for about the entire time that I have owned it. Needless to say, I am replacing my tube set.

Here's the question. I have removed (12) Svetlana 6N1P tubes and (4) Ei EZ-80 rectifiers. Shoud I replace everything with the exact name brand tubes or is there something better out there? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The 6n1p is quite a good sounding tube. There are not many different brands of those anyway. Maybe 2 factories in Russia built it.

But you could experiment if you like (ECC88 is fairly close to 6N1P..the 6N1P has higher filament current and has very very little microphonics). However with 12 tubes that is quite expensive. And in my opinion not worth it. You could play around with different EZ80's but that makes much less of a difference.

If there is no fault.. then the tubes are probably still OK. 🙂 in which case your best bet would be to work out what all the tubes are used for and then you can experimant with different 6n1p / ECC88's in different stages of the preamp, a schematic would be usefull here, I am also interested as to why there are so many tubes in there. For comparison, my 6n1p preamp uses 2 6n1p and 1 EZ80 rectifier tube's...

Just thought, it could use a seperate EZ80 for left and right channels... and mabey seperate again for the phono stage left and right.. but this would just be totall overkill imo..

Had a look at the photo inside the amp, think the inputs are buffered, some tubes near the inputs, maybe cathode followers.

Original the amp uses E88CC / 6922 and not 6N1 (600ma heater)

If it's meant to run 6922's, I'm surprised that the heaters are even glowing. Under those circumstances, he may be getting cathode poisoning(?).
