Andrew,
Regrettable, but did you look at the data sheet for the BYQ/BYV series diodes? Since the cathodes are conjoined, then inserting them EITHER way is ELECTRICALLY APPROPRIATE, since the internal diodes are identical and the outside terminations are both anodes. In short, you cannot install them incorrectly from the electrical POV. Any orientation is fine.
This means that the best spatial arrangement is your guide. You can mount the center diode with its tab facing the center of the pcb, and the outside diodes with their tabs on the opposite side to the center diode.
I hope you didn't mutilate the pcb by swapping out the diodes?
Ron,
Many thanks, much appreciated. You are completely right and I've changed the parts list. Fortunately both caps are the same value, so only the position is at fault. I'm very pleased the pcbs are all getting through, this is a minor coup....
Cheers,
Hugh

George,
I had them on hand! These caps are not critical at all.
Has your package arrived yet, George?

Thanks Hugh. I am still waiting for them, we have long weekend here so there will be no delivery on Monday. I hope to get them soon. Are you satisfied with the sound quality so far?

George,
Yes, this is a very simple power amplifier with only five semis, yet it sounds truly high end. It has a powerful bass, and full, rich midrange. Top end is good, and it's the quietest amp I've ever heard. For what it is, a DIYaudio collaborative design with limited development time, it is remarkable. It's not as good as a single ended 845, but it's still very, very good, very powerful for its rating, and well worth building and keeping.
Hats off to Greg, who did a wonderful job.
Cheers,
Hugh

Hi,
my diode difficulties are solely due to not having stock of the BOM diodes.
I thought I could read the PCB and work back to how to insert two legged single To220 10A diodes I had in stock.
But, I got it completely wrong. All my own doing.
It was at about the third assembly that it dawned on me that the outside pin of the group of three holes was always -ve. But by then I had already soldered in fourth assembly at the other end of the PCB. DUH!!!
Two pads lifted, but both on the non-trace side. All working now and possibly up and testing later today. Maybe even get a chance to compare FetZilla to nFetZilla.

Andrew,
I'm sorry to hear that. You are right; very careful scrutiny of the configuration of the pcb is needed, and since I didn't tell you the detail of the bridge, your mistake is entirely understood. I'm sorry - but believe me, those Philips BYV32E UFSR diodes are the cat's meow, they actually sound marvellous, or rather, they don't 'sound' at all!
Andrej,
You are on the list, please see above, my mistake. Thank you for your interest.
Would you like to email me via my website? I have something to discuss with you!
Cheers,
Hugh

Hi Hugh, my precious boards have arrived! Such incredible quality. Would be a joy to hear this amp as soon as my exams are over wooohooo!!
Boards 😉
Hi Hugh,
The PCB's and parts came in yesterday !
Thank you so much for this beautiful state of the art PCB !
Unfortunately I'm not able to make this amp in the near future (to much things to do at the moment) but I'll sure order more PCB's later when I have the time to do this properly ! Time is not my friend at this moment 🙁
Again thanks for all the effort.
Groetjes,
Audiofanatic 😉

Thank you for letting me know the eagle has landed!
Much appreciated, guys, that's South Island of NZ, Singapore, and the Netherlands.... they are getting through, that carrier pigeon is doing his job well!!
Now we must wait for the audio reports to come through.... enjoy the build!
Cheers,
Hugh

Ha, isn't it amazing that I am one of the closest recipients and still do not have mine?
Australian snail mail is appalling!
Australian snail mail is appalling!
Yes, Greg, it's a scandal.
However, there are worse scandals such as the state of the coffers in Greece and Italy...... hope it comes in today.

🙂 The boards arrived yesterday, time to gather the components. Our mail at least work better than our state fund 😛😀
BTW, the output devices have not exactly the same label on silkscreen, is that a bug?? 😀😀😀, just kidding.
Boards look fantastic, Hugh, thanks again 🙂

Thanks Spirtos,
Much appreciated!
You are right about the 'bug', the gerber conversion does not work well with vertical text in Protel, and turns it through 90 degrees, moving it also the right. The horizontal text is OK however. I continue to use this old version of Protel however because it's one of the few programs which does curves very nicely, giving a flowing look to the tracks.
Cheers,
Hugh
