Swapping OP amps

hey whats up guys...

so yeah... new to this place..
basically i was about to get a new tubescreamer pedal.. and was
looking up the differences between ts808 and ts9..
and i had read somewhere that basically you can get a ts9 to sound
like a ts808 by changing the op amp to an RC4558 ?

now i dont know **** about electronics n DIY stuff.. but yeah wanna
get a bit into it.. so i wanna know basically is this true? i mean i've heard
couple of "modded" ts9 and ts7 vids on youtube, and they sound cool..

will the op amp change on a ts9 really get me closer to a ts808 ?
coz i mean, the ts9 is about 99 bucks.. ts808 is about 180.. would i really
benefit from getting the ts9 and say spending upto 10-15 bucks
on replacements? coz i'd still be saving about 60-70 bucks easy..

but yeah in the end of the day, the concern for me isnt saving money
necessarily, just want a good sounding pedal.

if anyone could please advise me on this it would be great!
and also if you could link me to any articles for someone who wants to
get into the electronic side of audio, that would be much appreciated
as well! ive been thinking of getting some DIY compressor and EQ
kits to have a go at 😀

They both already use a 4558 opamp.
The TS9 uses some fets for its switching.
In its clipping section they use a few diodes with just a few changes in the output filter section, else they are basically the same.

You can find the schematics of each all over the internet.

I made my very First distortion unit, a MXR Distortion+, for $5 rather than paying the ridiculous prices that they charge for them.

Not only that I mine was better and quieter since the original one used a LM741 and I used a TL072.
It sounded just the same as the diodes, caps and/or filters is what mainly determines the characteristics in the sound.
Then I added more gain stages as well!! 😉

FWIW

thanks guys!

gonna give these a good read..
theres a dude here who builds gear and etc... gonna talk it over with him and try get
a custom pedal built ... was also thinking get maybe do a "custom" fairchild as well
if budgets permit...

any approximations on how much it'd cost to do a fairchild from scratch?
using the original parts (or as close to original as possible)

cheers!

You can make anything once you obtain a schematic, or design it yourself!! 😉

Building my Distortion unit was my introduction to DIY audio electronics when I was 14 or so, and haven't stopped since then for the last 37 years !!!
