Okay, all you guys draw up your circuits on something and then SPICE simulate them. I can only poorly draw circuits using symbols I drew with Sun OpenOffice on Ubuntu(linux subset), because when the Win98 computer got struck by lightning, the repairman put WinXP on a new mainboard that was not compatible with 98. He did not give me a license number or source disk, and he threw my Windows 98 source disk and box with sticker away. So when conflictor virus destroyed WinXP without service pack 3, I had 31 days after I loaded SP3 to come up with a license number before the XP froze me out. What really teed me off was when I removed the Office 2000 he gave me and tried to put Office 97 back on that I had a source disk for, a DLL was not compatible with WinXP. SO upgrade and learn a new set of "easier" user interface (requiring training courses for all the secret tricks hidden in the margins), or do without Office entirely.
So, instead of bribing the only repairman in town to clean up after himself, I installed ubuntu8 about 2009. It runs firefox fine and saves files. It does not have drivers for any printer I own or can find at Goodwill. When I tried to run a program suitable for Win 98 with WINE(PaintshopPro3), it only took me 3 days to reformat my hard drive, reinstall the OP sys and my 2 week old data. And the Sun drawing program, SUN open office, locks up if you put more than about 30 lines on a drawing. Also the source document where I laboriously drew out transistors, diodes, capacitors, coils, and rectifiers, has some kind of error in it. !!!!!! My processor on that computer was 400 mhz and it had 32 MB of memory. So I didn't run youtube on it or listen to the radio or play media, or audio CD's, or download flash player.
So last week my brother sent me a surplus dual core computer with 256 meg memory, a 64 bit processor with big speed, and WinXP proffessional loaded on it. Sort of. He had an office network with a hub called "Zeus". It is a Dell and has an actual sticker with a microsoft number on it. I tried to look at youtube today and got it to work a little bit, when it wasn't thrashing the internet updating AVG anti virus, and all sorts of mysterious things. Now It won't leave me alone while Microsoft tries to update Instant messanger, which I don't even want, but am not allowed to disable. It wants me to contact Zeus, or insert a source disk, over and over and over. Is there anything legal about buying a computer with a Microsoft operating system already installed on it? Can I get it to stop driving me crazy and actually run normal software and maybe print a PCB mask for me? I tried, as administrator, to load a game today, Civilization III, which the box says is compatible with XP, and at the end, the op system said I didn't have the priveleges to change something. I had already changed the firewall to enable games. Is there anything more useless than Windows? Is there anyway to print with Ubuntu without buying another ch****** printer that the cartridge dries up every month on? I see there is a wikipedia article on free "EDA"s, which is a new acronym for me, but even if I download one of those for linux it doesn't solve the printer driver problem. I'd also like to play and record audio CD's, but Ubuntu had the CD software bundled with the flash player, which would load down my processor and hard drive cache with dancing ads everytime I got on the internet.

Hi, sorry to hear about your problems.
256 meg memory isn't really enough for that OS. I would increase it to @ least 1Gb.
I can help you disable Instant Messenger & Zeus etc. There are probably many other things you don't Actually need running on boot, that you could disable too 🙂

Thanks for responding.Yesterday I went to Windows XP control panel as administrator, then clicked on something with "program" in the name, where it showed me various services for windows and non-windows. I picked firefox as the default web browser but instant messaging was greyed out where I couldn't turn it off. If I access windows help it refers me to the lack of communications with the Zeus hub. I have the ubuntu computer backing up data which ties up the monitor; will look for something called "services/drivers" this afternoon on the Windows computer. I'd have to ride the bus down to the library (Mon-Sat) to look at a Windows XP book if they haven't thrown it out. The Windows 95 help books show up at Goodwill, but not even Win98. I've been looking for a used Windows XP or 98 source disk on craigslist for a couple of years but they never show up, just Vista which is too big for any computer I own. The games I own (civ III, IV) are all for 98 & XP, also. Modern and PSIII games jerk around so much they give me motion sickess.

The Windows XP machine is running the installer program even with the DSP Modem disconnected. Then it comes up with a request for prokeys.msi from Zeus, then it tells me of a mandatory reboot in 15 minutes. This is on the administrator account. I did manage to squeeze into "my network resources" or something inbetween between mandatory update screens, and it showed Zeus as system administrator for about 1/3 second before hiding it so I could not remove it. I looked at program load/disintall, it does have microsoft office shown as installed on it. However, when I click the icon of some database *.xls my brother left, it doesn't recognize what program to run an xls file on.
It has a very clear Dell Microsoft sticker on top with a Windows XP media center edition 2005 title a long serial number, and a logo and some bar codes.
I view it all as a big conspiracy by microsoft to sell 2 or three operating systems for each PC sold. Barring some revelation from anybody here today, I'll be installing ubuntu 11 on the 2.6 gflop PC however useless it actually is for actual work besides reading text and adobe files on the internet.
The ubuntu 11 I downloaded already is too big to fit on a CD and I'll have to burn another 3 hours downloading the CD version. At least all my backups were done, however many "incomplete" warnings ubuntu 8 issued. That CD burner doesn't even work, I have to use the alternate Brasso disk creater to get anything out. However, ubuntu 8 was so hassle free after the update period expired. The first year after I installed it it did tend to burn 15 minutes every time you turned it on updating the daylight savings time tables, but at least I didn't have to wait for virus scan or an hour long virus update at turnon every week. Ubuntu is too weird for anybody to write viruses for it, I suppose.

Hi, as you don't sound too sure about Services etc, the best thing to do is, download Autoruns from here - Autoruns for Windows - It's perfectly safe, i've been using their tools for years.
Run in Admin mode & then go to File/Save & save as shown in my screenie. Zip it & then upload & attatch it in here. I'll then be able to load it up in my Autoruns & see what's going on. I'll then post back & let you know what you can do 😉

Thanks for listening. I was hoping someone would tell me there is a dell or microsoft website where I can download a copy of this windows xp media edition of the serial number on the sticker. Plugging this computer into the internet allowed microsoft to take control and destroy the utility of the software with updates I didn't ask for, and mandatory reboots for "security" every 15 minutes. It is pretty obvious my brother's IT person has configured this computer to run XP pro from his master server, where the license probably lives. I don't really need XP pro which has the wrong DLL's for the civilization III game, and am not going to be running off his server Zeus. However, the chance of my brother's taking time to find the exact proper load CD for this windows media edition is zero. My brother is a busy man, as is his whole team. I'm sure he hasn't saved the CD since 2005. That is the microsoft business model, I suspect, one legitimate copy and only true thieves in 3rd world countries can run XP without it. I'm just grateful for his old junk computer, that might with 2.6 gflops and 1 gb memory (second look) and 100 gb hard disk might at least run youtube okay with ubuntu. Even if I never print a thing with it, at least I might walk CD's of EDA program outputs over to the library and use their printer.

If you followed my advice in my last post, we could sort those problems out. It's up to you whther you actually want to, or not ? If you don't i'll move on.
