Many thanks twluke. "dtb=am335x-boneblack-botic.dtb" was the missing ingredient. Now working great.
I was previously using botic7-rc1, and I had actually followed that same installation process - but that was last November. It's hard to keep track of this information.

Hi guys! Where do I start now to get a Linux image with Botic, and no Volumio? I can't seem to find it, but I prefer to go that way, since Volumio is messing with mpd.conf amongst other things ... Any suggestions?
After abandoning my Botic/Buffalo II for about 18 months, I've decided to give it another try. It's not going well so far...
I saw that there was a Volumio version, so I thought that might be a bit easier. I installed it per the instructions and loaded it up. Nothing.
Finallly bought a serial cable to ease the painful process and this is what comes up:
Can anyone shed any light?
Thanks.

Duffy Moon, it seems that SD card does not contain valid Volumio image:

FIY: Next Saturday the Debian 9 (stretch) is expected to be released. I'll wait with preparing a new Botic image until then.
Thanks miero. I re-attached Cronus and plugged in a portable hard drive.

Yes, I've tried the volumio-2.166-2017-05-11-bbb.img and it is broken.
The issue seems to be caused by missing loop0 device, but it is already fixed, but the image for BBB is old. I'll ask Michelangelo to rebuild the image.

I'd say best option is to download botic4 from here: http://bbb.ieero.com/botic4/bbb-botic-v4-1gb.img.gz
It works without any trouble .... (MPD with MPoD for example), or just MPC in Linux works also ... Not sure if I miss something out by using this version, but it seems to work as good as anything else ... 🙂

Yep, see https://volumio.org/direct-dsd-support-volumio-dsd512/
However, no idea if that will work trough i2s on BBB, probably it will be resampled to max PCM playback rate (at this point I would suggest enable resampling, leave everything on native but lower the resampling algorithm quality option until you get smooth playback)
