the guy at e-speakers told me to try 0.5uF for an XO near the 17-18K I want. Boy was my 2.2uF WAAAYYY off !!!
He wouldn't tell me how he came up with that value, but he did say the LeRibbon tweeter has a transforer in series with it - which explains the ~zero resistance it has.

That would imply a nominal impedance of 12-16 ohms...

Ok, the MG 27T wasn't really that efficient because it is 4 ohms and rated at 2.83V/meter

Here's another candidate:

The Audax TWO25A12
As you can see from the data here:
http://www.partsexpress.com/pdf/276-106.pdf
It is also rated at 2.83V claiming 96 DB

BUT it is an 8 ohm driver, so is it really 96 dB?
If so, it matches the Fostex prety well, without an L-pad

Another possible good thing is that it has a rising rate above 10K
which means I could mount it in the same baffle as my Fostex.
I am tilting back the baffle 15 degrees to smooth out the Fostex's response. It looks like the same 15 deg would work for the Audax tweeter. Any opinions?

yup, it doesn't look that good, I'm not sure what a good waterfall is, but I assume that you want it the to stay the same profile as the high level curve but just get lower in amplitude. It does have pretty good dispersion I guess

As always, the competition is the Fostex FT17H , but I have never seen a waterfall graph of that either. Fostex is pretty tricky about not revealing more than the absolutely have to. And what they do publish is pretty smoothed, with axis compressed. Yet most of their stuff is reputed to sound pretty good.

BACK to my question: Is the Audax actually 96dB at 1 watt, one meter? (above 10 k)

Probably they are using it. I don't see the glint of the titanium dome. (there are two models, a fabric dome that is more efficient, which is the one I referred to, and a less efficient titanium dome.)

Speaking of the titanium dome. Here is a speaker that uses it:

And it's brother:

Here is the Audax info:
http://www.partsexpress.com/pdf/276-108.pdf

Note how no one seems to know which way to orient the waveguide or whatever it is.

I guess it seems to be OK. BUT there are not a lot of choices in the efficient direct radiator dome catagory.

At the moment I noticed that my Fe 208 Sigma graph has a peak where some tweeters have dips. I may factor this into my decision. This may be a fools errend because the graphs are so
inaccurate generally, and they change a lot depending on how off axis one is as you have pointed out in the past......

Got my FT17H's in the post the other day. Gonna mount them in an open baffle with the FE204's, with a 1.5uf cap between them.

Any suggestions for how to calculate optimum baffle dimensions?

The next step is to build a couple of Phoenix subs...

How is everyone else going?

🙂
