ive got a sherwood 50w 2 channel hi fi amp. it was a very good amp for the hi fi speakers i had. for a long time it has been sat doing nothing since i got biamped studio monitors.event tr-5.
but yeh long story short is there anything i could use it for in terms of homemade subwoofers. could i use it to power a small sub. was thinking one 6-8 inch driver. could i put a low pass filter in the sub and use the hi fi amp?.easy as that?
reason iam wanting to do this is because i want to make a subwoofer for fun and plate amps seem silly priced.
i would like to make my own crazy sub ,by crazy i meen custom design not mega loud.can upgrade amp later as its the enclosure design iam more interested in.
what would i need to add to my amp to use for subs?
it would be in a small room/bedroom.

So no processing? Is it just an amp or is it a receiver of some sort? 50 watts could make two tang band mini horns (http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/subwoofers/201113-cheap-tang-band-mini-horns-back.html) belt out respectable levels...but id want some processing in there (low and high pass, and maybe delay for your tops or main speakers) throw a mini DSP in the mix and for about $250 or so you will have two subs and processing.

If you build a musical sub(s) like in the submitted picture, you need no more than suitable line level-LPF to interface to your Mains and a HPF for the lows ( x-max is unknown and needed for calculations) is always mandatory if playing at higher SPL.

yes the amp is just an amp,no reciever etc. has eq,loudness,direct controls/buttons.

i know cheap subs dont sound good. i have owned 2 before .one was an 150£ warfedale and other 200£ paradign both were average to say the least.so i wouldnt get the above eltax one but it is cheap.
reason iam building one myself is to have fun trying to create some designs, ideally cheap as possible.
once ive got the speaker parts i will build many enclousures with unique designs.
i have looked at simulations of how waves react to shapes.i have also made music for last 10 years mainly drum and bass so understand how to make a fat sub sound from sine waves and how adding higher harmonics can give more pecieved lower frequencies.maxbass/bbe button on midi sytems:}.
i also know trying to make a 20hz sub is pointless on my budget. iam thinking best range for cheap sub would be 40-85hz.my monitor speakers go down to 56hz. reason iam thinking this is because nearly all music is filtered ,ie drums ,kick could be as high as 85hz cutoff to give room for 50-80 hz sub bass.and the song proberly cuts at 40-50hz no lower. iam thinking 85hz for sub top end so it doenst add to much boom around 100hz and can be leveled with the monitors.
iam new to making subs/speakers. so far has only been simulations and google sketchup. mainly ported boxes because i dont understand horn designs yet.
