So I have a factory restored set of Tympani IVa's that I was able to finally unbox and set up. Love the mid/high end, but the bass leaves me cold. Also, these things are not making the significant other happy with their cut the room in half size. So, here are my options:
1. I can ditch the 2 bass panels per side and build a set of h frame woofers run up to say 250hz or so. I would convert the mid/tweeter panel to actively amp the woofers, mids, and tweeters. I have 2 AE dipole 18 woofers factory new in boxes I bought to use for subs but could use them instead of the bass panels.
2. I also have 6 24" neoplanar drivers made by ATC with B&G. They are said to cover 180hz to 20,00hz. I would make a baffle with 3 per side and use these with h frame 18" woofers as above.
3. I would make a baffle and use the Magnapan tweeter with the ATC neoplanar ribbons as mids, woofer as above.
4. I have 20 neo-8's I could use as mids along with the Magnepan tweeter in baffle, along with the woofer as above.
5. I understand that Magnepan is now upgrading the mid panel to a foil mid. I would replace the Tympani mid with the new foil mid and use it along with the Magnepan tweeter and AE h frame woofer in an active 3 way.
Any suggestions???? Thanks!

I have only once heard a pair of Tympanis. That is a rare vintage speaker that you could easily sell if you did not like it.

Sure, that's a possibility but then what?
I don't have experience with the other speakers you mentioned. You seem to have your plans.
I don't expect bass below 40Hz from my MG 1.6s. The lack of the bottom octave is not a very big problem (certainly not as big as other problems that speakers can have). I just live with it.

I wouldn't expect bass below 40Hz either with MG1.6's but with 2 dedicated bass panels, I expects more from the Tympani's.
Have you tried this trick ? You will gain some low end for sure. Magnepan recommends this for the 30.1.

I have them set up like this but about 5 feet from the side walls. Best I can given the room.

You can buy a new pair of 1.7i, and build a pair of subs with your AE 18s.

Do the 1.7i have the same tweeter and midrange as the Tympani IVa's? They appear to be a step down from what I can find...
No, they don't have the ribbon tweeter. But they do have Quasi Ribbon woofer and midrange, which is a step up from the Tympani's.
I could have Magnepan replace the tympani mid with the newer foil mid for a lot less than the 1.7i and have the better ribbon tweeter, all for a lot less than new pair of 1.7i, if that makes sense...No, they don't have the ribbon tweeter. But they do have Quasi Ribbon woofer and midrange, which is a step up from the Tympani's.
@cab
Can I ask what you paid for the factory restore of your Tympani's?
The reason I ask is that I'm considering a pair of 1D's.
I bought them just back from a full redo. I don't know what it cost, sorry.
