First off, I'm new to this forum so be kind.
I am thinking of adding a powered subwoofer to my system and I need some suggestions.
I have a Jolida 302b tube amp, maranzt cd, and a pair of MTM speakers I built from a Zalytron Aria 5R kit. The speakers have two focal 5" woofers and a Ravin 1" ribbon tweeter.
The Jolida has been modified including changing the AUX out to a sub-woofer out.
I love the sound of the speakers except they don't have enough bass.
I am thinking of building a 10" to 12" powered sub-woofer to match the system. I don't want to build from scratch so I'm looking for a high quality kit and I'm looking to spend around $500 +/- USD.
I tend to listen to Jazz, classical, accoustic, some old rock and roll (Cream, Doors, etc.)
So, does anyone out there have any favorite sub woofer kits that they can recommend. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jim

I've heard good things about the Titanic subwoofer kits. Also, I believe adire is still making a kit or 2. They used to be pretty high quality in the past, but I don't know anybody that has bought one lately. And don't be intimidated by building from scratch. If you don't want to cut the wood, you could always have a cabinet builder make you a box or have them at least cut it for you. That way you aren't limited to only a few designs.
Thanks for the information. I've heard of the titanic but I've never heard them play.
What I ment by "building from scratch" was, I don't want to figure out box size and design or match a driver to an amp, that sort of thing. I have no problem building the box . . . I've done that before. However, if I can get a good kit with the cabinet included that will save me time, and I have soooo many other projects right now, I'm afraid the wife would balk at another one.🙁
Thanks for the advise. I'll look into them.

Do you realise how big 20 cu ft is? I know you yanks like everything larger than life, but still that's pushing it!
Creative Sound has begun offering sub kits based on the Adire Shiva and Tempest. These are the "classic" drivers that have been used for years by DIYers. I still have my Tempest and Shiva subs and am still happy with the performance.
the CSS SHIVAS360 kit in a 2 - 3 cu. ft. sealed box would make a nice, small and musical sub.

If you don't want to build the cabinet you could get one from Madisound.

Nah. It all depends on which piece of furniture it is. 😉
