Hi all,
Browsing around, just looking at options. I like full range drivers and the sound, even whizzer cones. I'm curious about what options anyone can suggest for any size driver with moderate xmax. Something greater than 4mm basically I guess I should say. Not expecting crazy, but something closer to 6~7mm real world excursion capability? Mainly looking for something that would do well in a fairly larger volume bass reflex tuned down to say 40~60hz, mainly closer to the 60hz side, but I would absolutely entertain something that could do a 40hz range even.
I'm been looking at Mark Audio, Fostex, Lii, Seas, etc, on Madisound and a few others places. But is there anything else suggested? Not looking to go too exotic in the several-thousand dollar range. But anything fun in the $300~400 or less range would be open for playing around with a build. It would be used with active DSP to be able to EQ things as needed.
Currently using a pair of Visiton BG20's, 8" with whizzer cones in sealed cabinets. I'm going to re-do them in a bass reflex around 1.5 ft^3 tuned closer to 50hz I think. But before I do it, I'm curious if there are some other drivers that would be better at this. Use is music only. Not trying to be super loud. Will couple with a subwoofer. But I like low crossovers, so I'm trying to get down to 60hz or so before I need to integrate a sub.
Very best,

Very best,
Have a look at the 10p drivers, still available at Madisound, but probably not much longer by the sound of things. Not happy in a big BR box thou, most say 20 litres max. About 3db down @50hz. Nice smooth vintage top end, different than the other MA alloy cone drivers.I'm been looking at Mark Audio

Interesting thanks,
7mm xmax is impressive on a smaller driver like that. And they're suggesting less than 1 ft^3 with flat output from 60hz up to nearly 20kzh? Pretty neat. I'm definitely curious now!
I sure with they looked like those Lii Song drivers. I dunno why I love how they look, but I don't want to bother with how they sound based on what I've read and watched. Would love to find something that seems to behave like those Mark Alpair 10P but looked like Lii's.

Hi,
Tangband w8-1808 does +- 5mm linear and can move some air.
All the best

Interesting, thanks, I will check it out!
Very best,
Man, that W8-1808 is also beautiful. I love that look. Like the Lii Songs. They all seem to have a similar look in that way. I like it.

Hi,
Yes, beautiful, and also quite good for the money. I still have a pair and liked it a lot back in the days, but moved on since then. Of course, in the end you pay a lot more money for small audible differences, but that's how it is.
Would consider selling if you were on this side of the ocean...
1808 will need quite a big enclosure, but should do deep bass easily. Well, for an 8"... I have 18" in OB myself.
However, should you go this way, don´t trust Tangbands data and response graphs too much. They are known for being too nice. But even in real life, the response is quite good and requires only small corrections.

I found the TB quite coloured, even after a bunch of fixes:
The Markaudio are notable in that compared to most FR have significant xMax and are all now fitted with arrectors when you start to approacj =h Xlim.
If you are looking for something really good, versatile, and given the superb performance at a REALLY decent price to play with is the MA CHN-110. Dirt cheap basket, but once you screw it to a baffle it is more of less a non-issue. They do need a bigger box.
I am just starting to wotk on boxes for these. As an illustration there will bve 3 Classic Golden Ratio boxes, 13, 17, 30 litres (my reflex alignment), which show the wide range of box sizes that can be mnade to work. And then there ar ethe TLs (quarterwave designs) and horns which can get quite large.

Thanks all, great new options to explore!
These are lovely looking!
I expected at least a double budget suggestion, I know it seems silly, but I tend to suggest half a budget knowing I will go over it double. So it's ok actually! 😀

Haven’t heard, they look really nice, and reviews have been very positive.
Even thou you buy these direct, he would still need to at least double his budget.

Very best,
I listened to CHN-110 in FHXL where it was very satisfying. Check what @waxx had to say about his build.
Wow, a $66 driver? Interesting. 8mm xmax too? Seems like it drops off under 100hz real fast. I'll look up some builds here. If I could get 60~70hz range, that would be really nice, either via bass reflex or tapered horn maybe. Though don't want to make full on towers with them, more like mini-towers (thinking 11" x 16" x 20" type dimensions, still small enough for stands but not tiny).
Very best,
Yeah that's easy with the CHN-110 in a BR. 25 litres @40hz tuning. Nice little standmount. If I could get 60~70hz range, that would be really nice, either via bass reflex or tapered horn maybe.

Lovely looking inexpensive speaker. I'll grab a pair at this price, that's nothing.
I sure wish they had that look like those previous drivers, the Sonidos or Liis. Dunno why I'm drawn to that aesthetic.
Very best,
It's great to see a low cost solution to a question that probably gives some 'exotics' a run for their money 🙂
I've been thinking about building another pair of BiBs since I found my old fostex 166e's. The chn-110 BiB looks very close in size if memory serves. It would be interesting to try them side by side. I'll have to pull out the xls and take a look but either way, I'm definitely picking up a pair.
