Linear Technology's LTSpice seems to have the upper hand.
Its ready with Triode, Tetrode, and Pentode symbols.

Then you just need to visit Duncan Amps and pick up the
spice model libraries, starting with dmtriodep.inc

TINA-TI is also free, and has slightly better libraries if you
are needing more transistor choices. But I havn't figured
out how you add tubes to it? I'm sure its been done...

Cadsoft Eagle. Unlimited schematic size, limited board (if you intend to produce PCB from your schematic) to 8x10 cm in free version.

Remember to download tubes.lbr from their website. This is the library that contains many commonly used tubes and symbols you can use to make your own.

If you use Windows, you can use Paint. It's so simple that it's really fast to draw once you familiarize yourself with it. The part that takes time is building a library of symbols. I have two, smaller and bigger. This one is smaller, that I use for forum posts:

The bigger one I use for my own archival stuff, it's prettier:

Anybody want a library, post me privately.

I bought the bullet and bought a computer with Windows 7 to run cad. TI seems perfectly willing to send me TINA-TI if I don't live in an embargoed country, but the Windows won't let me make up a program file in the programs files location, since I am not the system administrator. I'm the owner of this **** computer and have erased windows op systems with a bar magnet before I bailed out and went to Linux. But yahoo won't deliver mail to Linux anymore. How do I get system administrator priviledges on Win 7 basic? I don't want to put the file in "my pictures " or somesuch; the game I just installed put itself right in the programs files directory where it belongs. The whole "mydroolingopsystem" phenomenon annoys me to the max.
BTW I'm trying to cad draw a schematic involving power sources, optoisolators, fuses, jfets, BJT transistors, NMOS fets. I don't need a distortion simulation, I just need some comment from the knowledgeable here that it might work since I'm doing something new.

Thanks. On to Ubuntu 13 Linux. And schematics on paper with a pencil. Where is that bar magnet? Microsoft take note, we can do without you, or prefer to. Spending ever more money is for idiots not me. That trick of requiring different dll files so that couldn't run Office 97 on Windows XP should have cured me forever of purchasing anything from Microsoft.
BTW, putting the TINA-LT zip file in Win 7 "downloads", then double clicking the file name, does exactly nothing.

For security reasons you don't want your regular user account to be an admin account. If you have a background in linux, this should be pretty familiar to you.

You can run individual programs as admin by right clicking on the icon and selecting Run as Administrator. I seem to recall doing that on Windoze 7 Home (or whatever the lowest grade of Win7 is).

Now for CAD software, Kicad seems to be pretty decent.

In order to put files in restricted locations, you need to run windows explorer 'as administrator'. Right click 'run as...' You can only do that when your account has admin privileges.
Compare it to using your valve amps: your family members can adjust the volume, but only you may adjust the bias. And to prevent accidental bias changes, you don't put the bias pot as accessible and located next to the volume pot: it's hidden inside the amp or in some other 'admin only' location 🙄

Solid Edge 2D is distributed freely. To me, it's the best free CAD solution currently available.

Or find a used Autocad 2000. Also 2D only, but the most comfortable and convenient user interface I ever found in a CAD program.
