Hi, currently I have this headunit http://iweb.alpine-usa.com/pls/admn/item_info?p_item_name=TDM-7582 driving these fronts http://www.infinitysystems.com/caraudio/product.aspx?ProdId='REF6012I'&Ser=REF&Cat=MEL
and these rears http://www.infinitysystems.com/caraudio/product.aspx?ProdId='REF9613I'&Ser=REF&Cat=MEL .
No amps or subwoofer.
I like the sound EXCEPT that most of the time I find it lacking in bass. Actually let me re-phrase that. I tend to keep the tone controls - especially the bass control - in the center (no gain/flat) otherwise the bass really muddies up everything. So I choose better sound to more bass. I have been thinking about what could be the most cost effective way to add some more clean bass in the system. Not window shatterring bass, just a little bit more for a more complete sounding system.
The situation is that the headunit has only one RCA output (L and R). So I cant really use a four channel amp to drive all speakers with amps in the hope for getting more bass.
Would it make sense to just power the rear speakers with amps ?
or would it be a better idea to leave the speakers connected as they are now and also use the rca outputs to power one or two small subwoofers via amps.
Thoughts anyone ?

depends on what your end goal is.
If in the end you want an entire system with new speakers, amps and subs. Then you need to see what part of that finished product you can afford right now. If you can afford the sub and amp of the finished goal right now, go that route. If you can afford the amp and speakers(or want the current speakers) go with the 4 channel amp.
There is no sense spending money on somethign you plan on getting rid of.

Hi Percy,
It looks like this head unit is designed to have a sub woofer with amp attached. The single pre-amp output may or may not be filtered for a sub woofer. (has low pass filter inside.) If it does, just hook up a small, say, 50W amp with a 6" or 8" sub-woofer(in box) Since it is a single pre amp output, it most likely does but if it does not, you can make a simple low pass filter using a resistor and a capacitor on the input of the amp.
This would be the simplest solution. Then you could turn the amp gain up, and the bass control down on the head unit, and get the results you wish. Smaller power equals smaller $$$$$.😀

sorry if I wasnt clear but I dont want to replace anything in the future. I will be keeping the headunit and speakers always.
I only want to know what would be the best approach to add more bass to the system.
Would simply adding a sub using the 1 RCA output from the headunit do it ? or going all the way with a 4ch amp + powered sub (or a 5ch amp + sub) is the only way to do it ?
CBS240, I dont believe the rca pre-out has a low pass for a sub. The specs dont mention anything about that.
Anyway, any opinions on this amp ? -

Hi Percy,
Honestly, 1 single 70Wrms channel of power(or 2 X 35Wrms bridged) would be plenty of power to a 100Wrms sub if you are using just the 4 channels from the head unit. I would not expect more than 15Wrms per channel from the head unit of clean audio power. Max power ratings are misleading. There is no reason to spend more money than you need to, well unless you just like to spend money.🙄 The amp you are asking about is fine but may be a bit overkill unless you plan to upgrade in the future. I would bet that since the RCA is a single mono channel pre-amp out, it has a low pass filter. Bass is usually mono anyway because low frequencies are non-directional and you can't tell from which direction they originate as far as stereo is concerned.

Actually it is a stereo rca out. By one I meant one set.
Yes bass gets non-directional when its gets that low and if it is recorded exactly same in both the channels its fine but if its recorded uniquely in both channels then wouldn't I loose the bass information of the channel I am not using ?

Yes you would. Most mono sub amps have stereo inputs, to which you connect both channels. The amp sums the two channels into one, and that way, you don't lose any bass information.
