Subwoofer Kits In Australia

Just wondering if there are other stores simlar to Parts Express that will ship to Australia but provide a cheaper shipping option?

All of the local options to me such as Jaycar, Advance AE etc all seem to be fairly expensive in comparison.

I am looking for a decent 12" woofer such as a Shiva or Dayton along with a decent plate amp.

Anyone have any suggestions?

By kit I'm assuming you'd like a ready-to-assemble sub, complete with pre-cut MDF, which is heavy and expensive to ship.

All you'll really need to have shipped is the driver unit. Acoustic Concepts (in Melbourne) will ship you a Shiva for only AU$17 last I checked. AC might even have kits or completed subs at a reasonable shipping price. AC also sells Redgum and Hypex plate amps.

JE's 12" CS2228 driver unit isn't bad at all especially at its current sale price and they've got a Newcastle branch. (Published specs are all wrong though). JE's plate amps are the same ones PE sells.

A decent jigsaw is absolute minimum must-have for a sub project and they're quite affordable. If carpentry is the problem, well... Surely someone can help out with the cutting part. (Collo seems to be interested in helping you out).

Good luck 🙂

Thanks will contact Accoustic Concepts to see how I go.
A kit would be nice but given the price of the LSK or other kits the full DIY (or DIY with some help from others) sounds like the way to go.

I am happy to just buy precut MDF from Bunnings etc I just want to make sure I end up with a decent sounding product.

That Jaycar driver sounds interesting. Will performance be similar to say the Adire Shiva? I after something thats going to be used for both music and HT.

Perhaps at least one has measured his/her CS2228, but we'd just have to wait for the owner to post the data.

I have one, and its 15" version, which is the best sub JE ever sold (which is also discontinued and no longer available). Should've bought 3 more when they were on sale and being sold out.

Anyway, I haven't felt the need to measure either driver because I'm very happy with my Shiva. The only place I've heard the CS2228 is in a car (so naturally it sounded bassy). The 15" version sounds close to a Shiva, but the latter goes deeper and cleaner.

The 15" sub was in a smaller vented-box at Fb=30Hz (shop demo sub) whereas my Shiva is in an EBS alignment at Fb=16Hz... Quite a difference that's why. Having heard both at equal high excursions I can say the Shiva goes cleaner indeed.

Short of requesting JE send one for Dumax testing, which is pointless now anyway, we can only go by pole plate thickness. CS2228 has a thicker pole plate compared to the 15" version, so I'd say the former goes cleaner, but the latter would go louder.

In terms of raw driver performance -- no EQ, enclosure etc. -- the Shiva goes deeper and cleaner simply because it is made for home subwoofer duty. Both JE subs were made for the car audio market, which would explain their relatively higher cutoff frequency (and unconfirmed linear Xmax).

Bottom line... Go for a Shiva -- tried and tested by many.

Regardless of which driver you'll go for, make sure your listening room is nice and solid. Concrete or brick walls compared to something of less rigid and dense material makes a night and day difference in bass reproduction. And hope that you've got good room acoustics.

Cheers 🙂

Oz Plate amps

Anyone know any good local souces of plate amps?

A friend wants one that allows you to run "satellites" off the crossovers, from speaker outs on the plate amp.

Amongst the Hypex plate amps from John Woodhead at Acoustic Concepts,m only the more expensive models have this option.

There's the Australian ebay shop Toys4Boyshttp://search.stores.ebay.com.au/search/search.dll?query=subwoofer+amps&srchdesc=y&sid=95211850&store=toys4boys*com*au&colorid=-1&fp=0&st=2&fsoo=1&fsop=1&submit=Search

. . but again a bit dearer

Jaycar has now stopped selling them.

Target price about $150.

Thanks

> Which ones has JE stopped selling?

Jaycar Melbourne told me this two days ago, I thought all.
Though the website shows there staff was wrong.
There's a gap from 60 watts into 8 ohms to 150 watts at more than double the price.

"satellites" off the crossovers - a basic approach

> AU$150 can probably buy a 2nd-hand quality plate amp.

Where have you seen 2nd-hand plate amps? Trading Post?

Unfortunately there isn't anything here that compares well to places like Parts Express.

The XLS is great value here in Australia.

I wouldn't buy a driver like the Shiva anymore. It's a bit out of date now. There are so many sub drivers coming into the market now that are superior.

Often you can get drivers cheaper from overseas, even when shipping is factored in. I purchased my AV12s for just $20 more than it would have cost me to get the Shiva from here.

Regarding plate amps, I prefer to use a PA power amp and get a filter kit like the one you can get from Jaycar cheap. Plate amps often are lacking in their choice of filters, often have boost to be removed and neglect rumble filters! :smash:

Jaycar have cheap sub drivers (and some that are not so cheap), but when I listened to them next to the JV60 kit (on which my mains are based), they sounded terrible!

I believe you can get the TC sounds TC2+ for an attractive price shipped, I know a guy who got 4 of them for about $260 each.

Thanks

I haven't seen a good plate amp for $150 (Aus), yet. The ones that Jaycar were selling had a nasty bump in response at about 30Hz and were more expensive.

I was going to get a Rythmik Audio plate from the US (I think they were $199US+postage). They've got some good options for your high=pass filter. Then I decided on a Behringer A500 from Brisbane Sound Group. $287AUS, including postage, brand new. 160W (stereo) into 8ohms, or 500W (bridged) into 8ohms. But then I've already got the crossover before I hit the amp so that's probably not what you're looking for.

rick57, yes, and the occasional 2nd-hand ones at ebay. But while your friend waits for one to pop up, why not save up some more and get a brand new one, or one that's on sale? Occasionally Acoustic Concepts products go on sale. Christmass is coming, so...

Yep :bawling:

You got your AV12s at the pre-order price, right, how much? Lucky! But at US$150 (about AU$200) each at the moment, it's hard to pass up. How much would shipping cost? Couldn't find any shipping information in AE's store. For how many weeks did you have to wait for the goods and is it true that customs has lowered the taxable amount of goods to AU$250? Is it just 10% tax?

Worth considering, sml_nail.

I remember Ascendant Audio were selling out their discontinued line of XBL^2 subwoofers really cheap. Wonder if they've still got some more. (If only I have some spare $$$; my recent change of address took a lot ouf of my pocket.)

All of JE's plate amps have +6dB @ 30Hz, same ones as PE sells, but PE also sell non-EQed ones. I don't like rumble filters... I've no regard for my subs nor my neighbour's paintings and decor 😀

Jaycar have cheap sub drivers (and some that are not so cheap), but when I listened to them next to the JV60 kit (on which my mains are based), they sounded terrible!

I remember seeing one commercial sub, in an old issue of the Australian Hi-Fi magazine, which uses the JE 12" Carbon Fibre driver unit. What was the designer thinking!? That's why I recommend the CS2228/CS2350 if someone really wants one from JE.

Cloth Ears .... warning, will robinson, warning!!!

Don't buy amps from the US. They have reliability issues when used here. When I spoke to a guy from the Australia Behringer Service centre about buying from the US he said "you're mad!" Even if they can switch to the necessary voltage, apparently they are more prone to failing. Don't do it!

Isaac, yes I got it on pre-order, however, at certain times you can get them cheaper depending on exchange rates, which I think are more favourable now. I got it surface mail, but I know a guy in Tassie who got the TC2+ (which is like a lower distortion version with a bit less xmax and different parameters) - he got them for about $260 each and he went for a more expensive shipping option as he wasn't prepared to wait for weeks!

To calculate cost:
$USD + 5% (customs)
Add postage (www.usps.com)
Convert currency with an online calculator (typical x 1.3)

Rough guess is that a $150 driver gets here for about $260 or so ...

Ascendant audio won't ship here. I sent them an email asking why (I wasn't impressed). No response. Obviously they don't think there is a market outside the US worth serving. Maybe if more will make some noise they might change their minds.

Paul,

Point well taken. I think Brian Ding's trying to build up a reputation for his plate amps. So when he says he'll provide a 50Hz/240v version, I would probably believe him. The only reason he's not selling here is that he doesn't have a distributor.

That said, as I mentioned, I've got an active x-over, plus an equaliser with a sub feed, so I have no need of a plate amp. Interesting you mentioned the Behringer Service Centre, have you met anyone yet who has used the new A-500? I'm planning on getting one for my next payday (unless Xcellent wins the Cox Plate🙂.

When Brian does have one, I must admit his servo kit is VERY interesting! What I'd really like is a version you can use with a power amp!

I'm also looking at getting that amp and no I don't know anyone who is using it (although have heard postings from one guy on here who has). I'm actually looking for others interested in a group buy for some Behringer stuff. Last year around this time I found the best price for Behringer stuff was at the distributor recommended by the guy at the service centre as "a big discounter." This year I'm going to try for even better prices with a group buy. Interested?

Since you are in Melbourne, shipping wouldn't be needed.

Shoot me an email if interested. I'm looking at getting the A500 and Ultradrive (although I'm told to expect a wait for that). Even if we get just a few interested, it puts us in a much better position to get good prices.
