I'm planning on building a new subwoofer soon, as the first step in replacing ALL of my stereo gear (its a all-in-one Sony atm).
I've been looking closely at Jaycar electronics and their gear, these subwoofers:
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productVi...&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=831
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productVi...&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=396
What do you think? From what I've been reading, bigger sub's are louder but often sacrifice accuracy? I live in a flat so REALLY loud isn't important but I'd like it to last me for some years.
The 2nd one interests me because it's got a lower resonant frequancy (the meaning of which i'm still not 100% sure 🙂) and a stiffer cone, which should allow it to be more accurate....?
The rest of the system that this will be paired with with be a tri-amped 2 channel plus sub setup....i hope!

you could have a look at the peerless csx 12' or xls 10' as well from wes components .com
http://www.d-s-t.com/peerless/data/831857.htm
http://www.d-s-t.com/peerless/data/830452.htm
the csx 12' is about the same in cost terms or do you want to stay with the 10' size .

I'll look at anything, but my knowledge is limited.......also, how much do they cost?
Resonant frequency- we want this to be LOW for a subwoofer?
get the 12" carbon fibre woofer, it has 93db - a 90db woofer, needs double the power to be as loud!
those jaycar subs you mentioned as a bit of a comsetic gimic i think.
bring a few cds and dvds to some shops and listen to as many subs as you can!!!!!

What's a flat?
I was thinking of building this sub http://members.ozemail.com.au/~joeras/sub_index.htm
The 12" peerless XLS is about 150 USD in US
Peerless has an Fs of about 18 Hz your jaycar subs are 24 and 33 for Fs. The sub/design should yield very accurate sound, I hope. Peerless sub has an extremely low distortion.
The link for the above sub tells you what box and amp to get (Jaycar amp if in Oz) and what modifications to make. It is sealed though, don't know if want vented. Vented goes lower (lower f3) than seal (did you know that?), but sounds poor IMO.

Yeah, I have to agree. Those response subs from jaycar are mainly looks.
I've mucked around with a few in the past, and their TS parameters are waaaay out of whack. Simulations show very good results, but when you build the thing, its just plain poor.
I would definetely go for the xls range of subs over response.

that link looks interesting, I've heard that the Jaycar amps are dodgy..I was planning on using a Elliot sound project 350w amp (although I'll want to build a few smaller things first).
I knew vented went lower, but I thought that quality was not significantly degraded? The other advantage I liked was smaller box size....
You mentioned the lower Fs (resonant frequency?) of the Peerless, but what exactly does that mean?
btw, a flat is an apartment.
