I am really a newbie to this forum and setting up car audio equipment!!
I am upgrading my audio system in my boat and would like to install a subwoofer box in this area ( pic attached) . the opening is 21" wide by 23" tall and only 17" deep. the question here is that since its going into an open area do I inset speaker ( which is a kicker square L7 7 1/2 deep ) a few inches ( how many inches is good? )and put a thick plexi glass on the front? also does the size of a port really affect the sound? I will be putting the port at the bottom and need to know if I can make it as wide as the opening? when sitting at the captain's chair my feet do go into this area 2" to 4". thanks in advanced for any input

The port greatly affects the sound, it decides the tuning frequency of the box. You can use winISD to calculate the box size/tuning of the port. Not sure what you mean about the plexi glass, but I don't think you should cover it with plexi glass. You can do whatever you want for the inset, you don't have to do that though. Normally you'd just flush mount it on the wood.
