I have a design I want to try, but it uses the 2SK2221 and the 2SJ352 as drivers. These devices are extremely expensive where I live (+350euro per piece!!) so I would like to substitute them with other mosfets like the IRFP9140 and IRFP140.
Is it really that simple? Or am I about to make a big mistake?

If you are checking Farnell then their price for 2SK2221 seems incorrect (EUR 434). They sell 2SJ352 at Euro 4.78 a piece and 2SK2221 is EUR 12 in Sweden at Farnell. Should be similar elsewhere.
Try other places before deciding on a replacement.
The Gate-to-Source voltages are quite different on thr IRF part and these Hitachi (?) parts so they would not be drop-in replacements I suspect.

Ah.. those are the prices I saw at farnell.. I was thinking it was a real rippoff ;-)
Might give them a call to make sure though. I don't want to order them and actually get an invoice for 800eur for an experiment ;-)..

It looks to me as if there's a printing error on that price. Probably is 3.50 euros. Why don't yo ucheck with them?

Peter,
Don't substitute with IRFxxx which are different (not lateral Mosfets), and exhibit considerable temperature coefficient at low currents, causing thermal distortion (and even thermal failure) if not biased with special arrangement.
You can use 2SJ162 and 2SK1058 which are very similar. These parts are available in France at www.electronique-diffusion.fr for resp. 16.80 and 8.40 Eu. per unit. The correct item numbers in their catalog are TR2SJ162 and TR2SK1058.
Regards, Pierre Lacombe.

My guess is that the price 350 Euro is for 100 devices, so they
actually cost 3.50 a piece. Some suppliers state prices like that.

replacements:
www.reichelt.de
2SJ162 6.80 Euros
2SK1058 5.10 Euros
Are there various Vgs groups? Reichelt will deliver without payint attention to group. Do you have data sheets?

or you can get them from those which are surplus to my needs (in the original anti-stat containers), shipping to Europe via Global Priority Mail is about $4 in the small envelope. Too bad, I would have brought some over there last week!<p>http://www.tech-diy.com/store.htm
I'm not sure what I should do. I'm looking at three amps, and I have to decide wich one I'm going to use. One of them is simply using a TDA7293 (3 or 4 in parallel), the other one is a velleman K4020 clone (http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7134) or this one...
What do you think?

Check out my search for similar parts
I just ordered 12 pairs from Exicon / Profusion:
Exicon / Profusion PLC
I also ordered a set of 2SK1058/2SJ162 from Randy Sloan (www.sealelectronics.com), although I haven't built the amps yet to be able to compare them.
