Substitute for Toshiba 2SA970 GR or BL?

I'm having a hard time finding Toshiba 2SA970 GR or BL transistors for the input board of my Adcom GFA-555. The issue is mostly finding them at that grade (i.e. MCM has them, but ungraded). I'm sure there must be a good substitute, but I lack the skills to confidently identify one. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks.

Fred

2SA970 can still be bought here, this supplier has been selling genuine parts for many years, but I think they only speak German: 2SA ...

P.S. the same here - and they still have 2SC2547E and 2SA1085E: reichelt elektronik - OnlineShop für Elektronik, Notebook, PC-Komponenten, Flachbildschirm, Festplatte, Karten, Kabel, LED

P.P.S. I just inspected my C2547 and A1085 I got from Reichelt recently and note that the package of the A1085 is slightly smaller, height even slightly below the datasheet tolerance. They still "look" genuine, print and all, but does anyone know how to measure r bb 😱

You can try BC559C, BC309C, BC413 and NTE replacements - www.nteinc.com.
For new designs, it should be a small PNP type transistor and from the hfe/Ic graph those who have highest hfe for lowest Ic. Vceo should be not more than 40V (most of applications need +/- 15V symmetrical or 24V single).

Sorry, I know this is an old thread, but this info may be helpful to some. Anyone who is repairing an amplifier, or it building one that calls for the 970/2240 combo, soon learns that these trannies are virtually unobtainable. The ones sold online from China are certainly fakes. What to do??

I have a Yamaha CR1040 receiver which uses IC's for predrivers, and the output stage, some of which have gone south. They are almost impossible to find, but there's a silver lining. This receiver, and probably others, HAS these trannies, and they're most likely still good. Because of this issue, which is common in these units, most people will only be too happy for you to take it off their hands for a few bucks at most. A virtual goldmine of trannies can be harvested, given the fact that if you can find NOS Toshibas, the price is usually outrageous! Hope this helps!
