I've had this idea bouncing around in my head for a little while and wanted to run in by some of you. I'm thinking about building my own desk and, as part of it, I had considered sticking a sub in each of the sides where the drawers would normally go. It would probably be a vented setup, but I guess it could be sealed if they go deep enough. Basically, I want to be flat to at least 20Hz, if not lower with minimal/no eq and be a very SQ oriented system. That said, I'm feeling like if the subs are on either side of my legs, I won't be getting much of the 'punch' and definition from the subs and would mostly just be getting the sound as it bounced back from the wall behind me. Thoughts?
What most would describe as "punch" lies in the frequency range from 60 to 160 Hz.
Low frequency "definition" also is in that range. Although "definition" is tied to directionality, subs small enough to fit by your knees under a desk will be pretty well omnidirectional to over 100 Hz. That said, to avoid localization, and sound "climbing" between the desk subs and top cabinets, you'll probably want a crossover below 100 Hz.
The increase in LF SPL possible due to your very close proximity to the subs will definitely allow you to feel and hear it before it is bounced back from the wall behind..

I like one gent's desk where he mounted a suitably high Qt driver to its modesty panel to create an OB of sorts. Don't recall the driver, but a DVC woofer wired to a stereo amp seems the most appropriate.
