In my SONY setup it has a sub-out RCA connector as normally in every DVD player has.
My question is I need to connect a subwoofer for this output.Do I need to use a active subwoofer amplifier (with low pass sub filter) or just an amplifier (without sub filter)?
Its spec is 1V,1Kohm impedance.

depends on the model You have.
You may simply connect any amplifier to that output, with a speaker.
If it plays full range, then You need a sub with a filter.
If not, then just grab any amplifyer You like and have a nice day.
Ok thanks for the tip. I'l do as you suggest
In my (limited) experience the signal coming from the 'sub-out' connector is lowpassed with a -6dB/octave filter, centered around 120 Hz.
Thanks for confirming.
So all I need to do is take an amplifier without (pre amp) & feed it from the sub out connector but the sub out is a mono output
you can split it up to drive a tereo amp, and use 2 subs.

if you are limited in space, you can try an isobaric setup.
Isobaric loudspeaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
just notice, the speakers should be back to back.
with this setup the cabinet volume would be reduced.
it has other benefits too, and some drawbacks.
like 2 times the amplifier costs and driver costs.
but many non-linear distorsion types will be canceld.

You don't need stereo for a sub. The ear is not sensitive to direction at low frequencies so a mono sub is quite acceptable.
