Sub-minis come in two basic flavors, battery types---hearing aid tubes, low heater requirements and low B+ needs, and those with hotter heater needs and higher B+. One of the best paper manuals that covers lots of sub-minis is the GE Essential Characteristics manual still in print,
BKAE7 - GE Tubes: Essential Characteristics
and well worth getting if you have a hankering to play around.
Don't over look Russian sub-minis, much cheaper and some times better for the job.
For power tubes 5902 was the easiest one to find until the guitar guys got into them for low-power practice amps. Now the best bet is the Russian 6P30B (4W plate), triode it and wire the plates in parallel. Happy hunting.
