Hi Guys,
I took the plunge a little while ago and built a sub using a Peerless 12" XLS 830500 driver in 47 litre ported box with a 90 mm port 75 cm in length ported to the front. The box is made from 32 ml mdf and I have a 14" square room. I'm using a 180 wrms plate amp to run the sub. I have found that this design allows the response to go really low but at times doesn't have the 'punch' I desire. The amount of bass produced is fine and the low end response seems pretty good but I'd like the sub to have a bit more dynamic 'punch'. I have tried it in a smaller 38 litre box with a 90 mm port 50 cm in length and this seemed to have a little more 'punch' but the bottom end just wasn't there. I've poured over Winpro for hours but as this is my first attempt I'm looking for a little advice.
Ta,
Glen

It would seem you like to hear a peaky bass. Stick with your bigger box and tuning (although I feel the vent diameter is too small) and play with the upper cutoff frequency and level to see if that helps. Failing that, build a parametric EQ, just one will do.
Punch is most often Mid bass (100-500Hz approx).
What is your x-over settings, and what speakers are you using to suplement the sub?

Cross over is 80 hz and I'm using Epos M22 for mains and M8 for centre. Mains and centre run as 'small'. HT amp is HK AVR 635.
Have you tried stuffing the port for a sealed enclosure response?
It may be a group delay or room-integration issue that could be helped with 12dB rolloff. An easy experiment worth trying.
