Sub Design Conflict

Hey guys,
I've decided to build myself a sub over winter break, and am wanting to use an Adire Shiva as my driver. I also want to use the design for the 54 liter sealed box on adires website (http://adireaudio.com/tech_papers/shiva_apps.htm ) seeing as adire designed this box specifically for use with their sub, as far as im concerned its going to be the best design possible. The only problem is, the design doesnt account for the integration of a plate amp, and I'm not sure I really have any other viable options than a plate amp given my budget. If you look at the box design in the design apps documnet, youll see thats its the interior braces of the cabinet that are blocking putting a plate amp in there. Theres not enough room to either side of the braces, and you cant move the holes in the braces closer to the center, seeing as after only 2 inches the hole will overlap where the braces connect in the middle. So Im at a loss for ideas here, am i going to have to make a seperate enclosure for the amp (that will probable take up too much room, kinda stretched for that in a dorm) Or are there mono amps out there that arent too expensive, say 200$ absolute maximum, less than 150$ is preferred (the plate amp im leaning towards is the parts express 250w model). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again guys.

Mike,

The plate amp should be in its own box anyway. You should feel free to modify the shape of the box to accomodate the amp... just make it a little taller (or wider or both). As to the Adire design being the best possible, much as i respect Dan & David, they for instance specify braces in the Tempest Sub that BrianGT built that divide the panels in half -- at least they divided them the long dimension -- the middle is not the most effective place to put them. Certainly not the best possible box in that case.

If I moved the braces like in the picture below (top view) I would give myself room to put in the amp, would I also avoid the problems of having the braces exactly in the middle of the panels? If not I'll probably just go the route of building a seperate box on the side for the amp. Thanks a lot for the help guys.

Move the middle brace down -- even just a little bit, and angle the other 2 if you can. Be sure to compensate for the volume the amp takes up (still be best to seal it off from the woof) and seal it.

From the point of view of transmitted microphonics it would be best to put the amp in a vibrationally isolated box.

i friend of mine made his sub into a table so it would fit into his dorm room. You could try using the designed enclosure as one big leg and the plate enclosure as the other leg. He used dynamat ( car audio dampening material) to isolate the top of the table. Not that it worked perfectly, but by the time the stuff on the table was dancing the noise was swamped my the audio output.
