I have a guitar amp in which it seems to have a faulty 2N5638 (obsolete) used for channel switching; there doesn't appear to be a suitable replacement locally.
I have a 2N7000 available, to only relevant difference seems to be that Rds on for the 2N7000 is ~ 1.2 ohms, the 2n5638 is ~ 30 ohms.
Should I give it a go?

You might try the J111. It has the same 30 ohm on resistance as the 2N5638. The IDSS is a little less but that shouldn't matter much in a switching application.
