I am trying to understand the different options I have in replacing a stylus. My Roksan cartridge originally came fitted with a Gyger S type of stylus. I can replace it with another Gyger S, a Gyger II, or a Gyger I. I can't seem to find out any information about what difference these alternatives might make to the actual sound. Does anyone here know?
The S has a narrower profile and bigger vertical radius which makes azimuth adjustment more critical and less wear from what I can tell from their literature
The 2 has a fatter contact patch with less of a vertical radius but as it wears, the contact patch becomes fatter front to back and that will increase distortion higher up in the range.
A microline , for example , will wear evenly and keep it profile against the wall consistently to track higher frequencies without increasing distortion. The S is closer to a microline than the 2 in this example and close to a shibata in shape
I dont know about the 1 though.

The short answer is ya pays yer money and makes yer choice! I have a gyger FGS on my 'best' cartridge (I say best but all my carts are strange mongrels made from bits here and there). On the Goldring 1042 (which is what your cartridge is) if the top is level it should be aligned, but as stated it's fairly critical to get it within a degree or two.
As to sound difference between the FGS and the lesser fne line option the internet is full of arguments on this, with no consensus. Some say the top of the line cuts are not so good on older or noisier vinyl. I've not found that to be honest. For me as the D42 is only €30 more than the fne line D22 I'd stick with the best as this diamond is used on big buck MCs so you get the warm fuzzy of being in a rich crowd.
having said all that, I tried a shibata for the first time about 6 months ago and decided I could live with that as my only stylus so take my advice with the salt it deserves!

Many thanks for the input guys. I think I will be going for the Goldring D12X. I recently spoke to someone selling a D42 (Gyger S) because it sounded "disappointing" in his Roksan Corus Black. After spending ages researching it seems three Goldrings are a straight swap into the Roksan but the D12x (Gyger II) is the one that best matches the original. It won't be for quite some time as I am saving up for some plywood for a new speaker build.
I have heard that said about the D42, although it reviewed well. I can only comment about the transplant of one into an MC of mine which I am happy with. But if you liked the original stick with it. The rabbit hole of trying out different stylii is deep!
