Streaming from YouTube Music – what are the options?

I have been streaming music via Volumio to a RPi DAC using BubbleUPnP, since BubbleUPnP has native support for Google Play music. Google Play music is ending and will be gone by December 2020. However, accounts (and playlists) are transferred to the new YouTube Music offering. My problem is that BubbleUPnP does not support YouTube Music.

What are the options for streaming music from YouTube Music using a RPi? Does not look like Volumio supports YouTube Music (yet), since that would be first prize, or am I mistaken? I have googled for solutions but right now my head is spinning and I don’t have anything yet. Please advise!

Ok, so I found a piece of info that explains why I cannot find any reference to streaming software (like Volumio or Moode in this case) that supports YT Music. Posted by Tim Curtis, the developer of Moode, in June:

I've looked at various YouTube hacks over the years and they are all problematic because they involve a messy process of downloading and extracting the audio track from the video and then adding metadata to it from other sources. There are a lot if issues in hacking YouTube and this is reflected in the youtube-dl project that currently has nearly 3000 open issues.

That means the end of my YT Music subscription. I shall probably move over to Tidal. Always wanted to, but kept on postponing - now I am forced.

I think Youtube music is a bit different. Since it works for Chromecast Audio, so there must now be some way of streaming audio only. I wonder is Google will ever make it work for other devices...
