Stiff subwoofer cone Suspension ? Smaller box ?

Hi.

I just bought 2 pcs of subwoofers for another car subwoofer project this time round. This time, the subwoofers i bought have stiff cone suspension.

I need to ask and clarify here isn't it in most cases that Stiff cone suspension subwoofers will use a much smaller box compared to loose cone suspension subwoofers? I plan to build a ported box for these 2 subwoofers.

Any advices are welcomed and much appreciated ...

Sorry, it's just impossible to say for certain. In a sealed box, the resonance is a function of the moving mass and the total stiffness (box + suspension). So a light, loose suspension woofer in a big box could have a very low resonance. Or a stiff but very heavy woofer in a small box could also have a low resonance.

I used to design car subs for one of the big companies in that business. The suspension is stiff mostly for reasons of durability (i.e. not shredding under high power). Car subs are trying to cram into a small box, therefore have a very heavy moving mass, therefore a soft suspension can't even hold the cone and the suspension has to be stiff.

You need to measure the parameters of the woofers in order for us to advise you about a box. Ported boxes are very very sensitive to the parameters, it's like rolling dice to build a box without parameters. Also if the box is small, it can become hard or impossible to put in a big enough port (or you may need a shelf port).

What model # are the subs?
