After reading the rave review a couple of times I was very surprised the 8600RS did not receive an "A" rating in the Stereophile system. For several days I considered writing the editor a letter asking why but upon reflection, and mainly in consideration of how the editor treats discontent, I decided it wasn't worth the effort.

Just because they like it for what it is, does not mean that they think it is among the very best available,
which is their class A. Components that are in class D can have very good reviews as well. In fact, that's
the whole point of the list, good components for the price. Of course, a lower cost component can still be
in class A, etc. if they think it merits being there.

I always wanted to try a 300B SET amp. Herb Reichert's review in Stereophile was the reason I bought my kit with Alps pot, Lundahl transformers and the big Mundorf caps. Currently running Psvane WE 300Bs and an Amperex Blue Boy 12AX7 for absolutely wonderful listening.
They are still recommending Scott's "Classic Vacuum Tube Phono". Scott did a huge amount of work parameterizing vacuum tube noise.
