Hello everyone,
I built the 16 watt stereo tube amp kit 16LS from S5 electronics and I'm having problems with the volume control. It needs to be replaced but I don't want to use the same one. It's shorting out and causing the amp to go full volume on its own. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good one for this amp. I don't think the original can handle the current or voltage that goes through it. That's my guess. If you could give me a part number that would be great. One day I want to build a PTP amp but for now this will have to do. Thanks in advance.

Try this 100k SMD resistor stepped attenuator from eBay seller tube_buyer. I've used a few of these with great results:
SMT Resistor Step Attenuator 100K Volume Control - eBay (item 330453566190 end time Aug-20-10 03:50:46 PDT)
I also like the Alps 100k volume pot from Radio Shack (PN 271-1732):
100K Dual-Ganged Stereo Volume Control - RadioShack.com
Lastly, if you can go with 50k and different pin configuration, try the Panasonic EVJ volume pot from Digi-Key (P/N P2H2503-ND):
Digi-Key - P2H2503-ND (Manufacturer - EVJ-Y10F03D54)
I actually prefer the Panasonic EVJ volume pot the most. It works reliably, tracks well and doesn't color the sound. The pin configuration is different than most standard volume pots.

Thanks for the info Rich. I'm looking forward to getting one of them. I'm back listening to this old POS Sony solidstater that is about as warm as a snow peak. Thanks again!
