This is the best step-by-step guide I know of. In the end, you get a pretty nice sounding speaker.

While intended for use with SoundEasy design software my SondEasy Design Guide has a pretty good step by step outline of how to design a simple two way speaker from start toi finish, from measuring the driver, enclosure design, crossover design and final system evaluation.
Ray Alden's Loudspeakers 101 is very good. Not light reading though as it goes through all the Thiele small parameters and what they mean.
The book is currently in its second edition, Loudspeakers 201, which I have not seen, but I would assume it has all the original content of 101.
