Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with either P-Audio or StageLine drivers both 12" and 15". I would be putting them in a simple cabinet, MDF based, to be used occasionally for small productions. I am after two top cabs, and two subs. I do not want to hire, as we also need a decent set of speakers for a small music group.
The reason I am after fairly cheap drivers, is that I do not really have any money to spare, as I am still 15, but need a small system. I have considered Eminence drivers, but they are way to expensive to have shipped to the UK. The budget is roughly £100 per top cab, with a compression driver and horn.
Thanks for any and all responses,
DarkDerp

Take a look at Loudspeakers - Drive Units | CPC
There will be something to suit your pocket and ear.

Thanks so much! Just one more question, how would I go about finding a compression driver that would work with a woofer? Does the crossover split power in proportion, so that a 50w compression driver does not get blown to bits by a 300w amp? Thanks again, DarkDerp
Build subs but buy some used tops if you are on a budget. Use plywood not MDF for PA speaker boxes.
What exactly is needed?
Are these gonna be used for vocal re-inforcement, or all-out raves?
Also, what do you have in the way of amplifiers?

Buying new parts and building speakers has its attractions, but do please look into used professional gear. You can get a lot of speaker for relatively low cost that way.
The resale value of DIY speakers will be pretty low, so you might get some good deals that way. Check out speakerplans.com, for the plans, forums, and maybe a chance to buy used stuff. Obviously there's a risk, but possibly less than buying used speakers from a music store or pawn shop.

For low to mid priced gear, this is probably true. For the good stuff they will still want serious money. Depending on what you're building it may be a wash or possibly favor DIY. But not if you're only looking to spend $200-500.
For DIY gear, no one ever considers resale value. Re-purpose value, all the time. You're better off stripping decommissioned DIY cabs and either selling the drivers or re-using them in another project. Plywood makes a nice bonfire (to roast weenies) when your latest hornloader doesn't work out like you planned.
The mark up on (pro) audio is nothing like high end boutique audio. If you tried to replicate the average off the shelf powered speaker with amps/processing/cabinet/hardware/grill it will end up costing much more than the factory stuff not to mention the lack of warranty and presenting a (professional look).
Even with passive boxes a good crossover that can handle 350watts is going to cost a pretty penny. Decent drivers (above what) are used in Gemini, Pyle, Skytek etc. are not cheap either.
I can find Yamaha clubs on craigslist for $250-$400 a pair which would probably not cover the cost of the drivers/x-over.
The real value of DIY is in the education it gives as you master woodworking/electronics/R&D etc.

If you're still looking for bass drivers, I have a pair of EV 15", already in birch ply (TL606) cabinets, with inbuilt, switchable 200hz passive crossovers. They're in Leicestershire. You're welcome to come and try them.
I have been messed about both on ebay and Gumtree with these and I do need the space, so I'd let them go in return for £150
