Hi guys
I have been hanging around on this forum for a while - thought I should post some pics of the start of my home system upgrade - the sub.
It is one of the 12" Venon subs from Jaycar - I thought I would give it a try even though I had been recommended not to use it. I am pretty damn happy with the results - seems to be good all round for home theatre and music. The box is about 85L - and two 80id ports about 390 long. The sub is powered with the 80wRMS plate amp from jaycar (because I already had it previously running two sealed 8's)
The next upgrade is a pair of 4 way speaker towers - 1200 high with 1" tweet, 5" mid, 6" and 8" midbass.
cheers,
Brett

Just from the looks of it, that driver looks like it could take a lot more power than you're feeding it. I'd look for a plate amp that can supply over 200W to drive that. Consider it for the future.
Nice finish on the box Brett. How was that done?
Also your 4 ways seem a bit funny. 1", 5", 6" and 8"? Certainly a different combination. What do you have in mind?

The sub can handle more power - listed as 180w... so a bigger amp would be a plan in the future.
Cal :
The box is made of MDF - braced. I used water putty to fill the holes (my cutting wasn't too bad - considering I have no proper workshop - as we are renting while our house gets built). I then did three coats of 50/50 water/PVA glue - sanding in between with 300grit sandpaper. I used 2 coats gloss spray paint, then two coats of clear.
As for the 4 way idea - I know it sounds a little funny - we'll just have to see how it goes! I couldn't bear to have left over speakers - so I decided to use them all.
I'll post pics of the finished speakers when done - I am finishing them in gloss white - just for something different.
cheers,
Brett

I like that white finish bludbunny.
Can you give more details? Is it straight from an aerosel can, proper spray gun, or painted by hand? Did you do a clear gloss on top?

Thanks for the comments guys.
After spraying the sub with black (and most of it getting taken away by the wind) I decided to brush these ones.
Pretty happy with the finish - but by no means piano finish!
I did seal the mdf first with two coats of 50/50 water/pva first - as the mdf is very "thirsty".
Hopefully it should all sound ok and look good in the lounge.
cheers,
Brett

here we go!
Hi guys
Bit delayed - but finally got a photo of the finished speakers.
They sound great!
Pretty good all round - for music and movies - but the sub of course can be switched off for crisp music listening without the overpowering bottom end.
cheers,
Brett
