Concerned about the very high heat of the Hammond 374BX PT and the top plate of the amp I got out my instant read meat thermometer and measured the Hammond at 140F. - 60C. The top plate is only a little cooler.
I've used other 300 Series of lower voltage Hammonds and they never got too hot to touch. My previous SSE builds were with the Allied (Hammond) 67KVG which ran quite cool.
Is this a cause for worry? Whisper fan worry? Replacing the 374 with the Allied worry?

Interesting top plates obviously get hot from the tubes/valves and the metal can be very hot near them.
My mains transformer however only gets warm to the touch never hot. Sounds like your current one (no pun intended) is faulty

With my 76th Birthday in a few weeks (an excuse you'll see), I am retiring from the pursuit of High Voltage.Concerned about the very high heat of the Hammond 374BX PT and the top plate of the amp I got out my instant read meat thermometer and measured the Hammond at 140F. - 60C. That overly hot 374BX? ... i ordered and installed a 6K7VG to replace it (I had one running cool in the SSE I built years ago) which ran for 2 hours and then blew out the secondary's. Had to be faulty, right? Just like the BX? So I notified Hawk who apologized (great vendor) and quickly sent a replacement.
My friend Steve thought I should do some more trouble-shooting, checking amperage for instance, so I re-installed the BX. As I finished all the hookups I noticed a leftover black wire on the Primary side that needed a home. So I had a look at the IEC, good, and then the switch ... wait ... does that black wire braided with the blue have faint red stripes? It does! Yikes!
The 374BX still runs on the hottish side of warm but all is well voltage-wise. The replacement 6K7VG is on it's way back to Hawk and I'm hangin' up my soldering iron.
