AT LAST ! ... 'Simplistic' Phono Preamp Passives ... All Collected !
😉
PHEW ! ... Now that was a l o n g break ! 😱
I have in fact been busy on all sorts of 'stuff' ... Progress I'm told !
Some figures which might make sense to Ricardos razor sharp mathematical mind. 😕
& a photo of my 'Simplistic' phono preamp Channel 1 & 2 passive components.

Ah ! ... The Correct Photo Found !
🙁
I couldn't seem to find the ^^ photo of all 4 sets of R.I.A.A. E.Q. parts I'd tested ...
... But it has been FOUND !
😛
I had been originally intending to make TWO Salas 'Simplistic' stereo preamps ...
... One for me & one for a friend. 😱
😱
But he has gone totally Wi-Fi & fully iApple for listening to Steve Albini these days ! 😉
🙄
So with a spare set of parts, I figured making a BALANCED preamp was a C O O L idea. 😎

Something C
L that takes yer fancy more often than not !

One of the objectives of my pirate voyage into RIAA audio, was to create a REVERSE equaliser.
😱
THAT in itself was a cruise around Cape Horn with a storm or two !
😱
Pictures speak 1000 words & luckily the mid-band is rarely a problem. ;-)
🙄
There are a few sketchy details a few Pages << back ... But here's the Teflon(TM)

Keep it in the g r o o v e . . .

Some Details About My RIAA Components ...
A friend of mine said to me ... " It looks like your RIAA parts are all over the shop " 🙁
Mmm ...
Well ... Perhaps it does !
So some explanation is maybe in order. 😱
The 4 sets of parts were probably the most difficult & time consuming 'matching' exercise I've ever done. 😡
The 47nF (ish) silver-mica capacitors were taken as 'constants'.
They HAD to be used & so ALL the other components HAD to harmonise with them.
So the 'ideal' value for these capacitors, is the main & only figure shown in BOLD.
I was also keen NOT to use multiple-parts in series/parallel for these RIAA parts also.
Except in the case of the 15nF (ish) silver-micas, which were all made from two 7.5nF (ish) ones.
This was needed to bring all 4 sets of the 4 capacitor/resistor passives into overall order.
For the 15nF (ish) silver-mica capacitors, the 'actual' value is the BOLD figure.
The 'ideal' value is the figure below in brackets.
The % deviation from the 'ideal' component value is then shown below the 'ideal' value.
This is NOT a % deviation from the perfect RIAA curve, which in all cases is WAY WAY smaller.
Then follows the resistors in the same fashion, the 'actual' value is the BOLD figure.
The 'ideal' value is the figure below in brackets.
The % deviation from the 'ideal' component value is then shown below the 'ideal' value.
This is NOT a % deviation from the perfect RIAA curve, which in all cases is WAY WAY smaller.
Well ... That's the story of the possibly random look to the figures ! 😛
I think I did OK ? 🙄
Let's hope this will work out OK for a potential 'balanced' implementation of the 'Simplistic'.

Reverse RIAA Equalizer PTFE Slab Gets Its Sockets ...
.
I never considered for years, even the possibility ...
... that building stuff on Teflon(TM) was ever going to agree with my wallet !
🙁
Perhaps that was because I was looking in the RS catalogue & all the other wrong places. 😡
However, the stuff goes on evilBay for mere pennies compared to almost anything else 'Hi-Fi'. 😉
You can even buy cheap frying pans with it on.
🙄
Consequently I had been a fan of SRBP for an equal amount of years.
😛
Compared to blunting hacksaw-blades, inhaling resin dust, shattered corners etc. etc. ...
... PTFE is surprisingly kind to my tools, lungs & temperament, as well as the already empty wallet.
Anyway, the 'board' was graced with some nice sockets for the electrons to scamper through on their way somewhere . . . .

The 2001 Kubrickish Teflon(TM) brick ... is 8" x 4" x 1/4" by the way. 😀
The thickness is a tad excessive ! 😱
But I had some spare 1/4" already ... so used it. 😱
I've had great success using 1/8" thick for big boards & 0.080" (2mm) for smaller ones. 😎
Less than this & the material is a bit too 'floppy'.

Hi sq 😀
Thanks for the " Looking good ". 😱
I promised myself years ago never to attempt a project with more than 10 valves or transistors ...
... I can just about keep track of things, without resorting to my toes for counting on as well ! 😱
The truth is, I nearly threw myself out of a window, matching those FOUR channels THE SAME. 😱 😱 😱 😱
Buying every wirewound-resistor stash on eBay for a few months, was a bit INSANE.
But kinda fun as well I suppose. 😉
I certainly ended up with a TREASURE CHEST that any resistor perv. would love !
Just had to find 4 lots all the same outta all that krap ! 🙁
Nearly quit the hobby ...
... but sadly for anyone wanting to beat the highest bidder on wirewounds ...
... I'M BACK !

The BIG ! resistor on the t.S.E.c reverse R.I.A.A. board
.
Yep ... It's the BIGGIE ! 😱
Comprised of several smaller wirewounds.
OK ... 85 Ohms out. 🙁
It'll just have to do. 😱
My Lotto numbers didn't come up either. 😡

drift ... Drift ... Drift ! ... DRIFT ! ... DRIFT !! ... DRIFT !!!

Having got all the resistors bashed 😎
into shape, extremely accurate & stable ...
... oh dear ... oh dear oh dear ... oh dear oh dear oh dear. 😱
THE CAPACITORS !
Plastic capacitors just drift ... period. 🙁
I tried every type under the Sun & all of them had very noticeable drift. 😡
Is this acceptable ? 😕
No ... not really. 😡
The best ^^ of the bunch. 🙄
A highly-selected cluster of Philips polystyrenes at 6.2nF & 1.8nF. 😱
Sadly they drift WAY more than the silver-micas I selected for the new phono preamp build. 😡
Just the way it is.
Time to throw 'em in the trash-bin & get some silver-micas for the Inverse-RIAA as well me thinks. 😎
