I'm building a spud headamp with a SE OPT. I'm using Grados so gain is a non-issue, output impedance is. I will be running 160V plate 2V LED bias. The 5842 ouput impedance rises exponentially with decrease current. Is the 6c45pi the same way (nothing on the datasheets)?
Also could the issue with finding matched 6c45pis be solved simply by running different plate voltages on L&R channels to compensate using a soundcard program to match the levels? The current I'm chosing (20mA) is low because I've seen reports that both tubes sound best at lower currents and I am using the Salas Shunt which requires huge heatsinking for larger currents.

No experience with 5842
6c45 seems designed to oscillate
6H30 through a 12:1 transformer is mighty fine
7788 in triode mode is your new best friend
Choose your current according to the anode characteristic curves, and not according to 'guru reports'.
Have a nice day!
