Hey all, so I have a pair of JBL 4770 boxes (http://www.jblproservice.com/pdf/Sound Power 4700 Series/4770A.pdf), which sound nice and loud, which I've been using as a small sound system for parties.
I'm looking into expanding my system into a larger full-fledged system for bass music centered around 4 hog scoops with 18LW1400 subwoofers, using the JBLs for kicks and above.
However, given the age of the boxes I'm not sure if I'll keep them around and I want to have some flexibility for placement and experimenting with the components at the top. I also like the reggae sound system aesthetic of stacking boxes (within reason; less is more), and so I've been giving some serious thought about detaching the bass section of the JBLs, cutting the 15s into their own baffle, and keeping the driver into its own smaller enclosure. This would allow me to put the 15s horizontally as kick bins and would let me experiment with the remaining driver, potentially replacing it with a different speaker or maybe adding an array of tweeters.
I theorize that though I'm sure to lose some low end, the presence of the hogs would make this mostly irrelevant (also the ported dual 15s are nice and powerful anyway), and this would simplify transport, as I own a _very_ small van that is really tight in space. The JBLs are also pretty damned heavy and this would minimize the assistance needed to stack up a system.
Given that the 4770 is a well-known design and getting replacement boxes or making my own is easy where I live, I'm wondering whether this exploration is potentially worth my time or if it's just a fool's errand.

Side by side placement of the 15" with the 2445/2380 sounds bad due to the poor off axis response in the crossover region.
Cutting up the box will make the individual parts lighter even if the smaller (less output, higher tuned) 2x15" box is still stood up vertically, but for what you are trying to do, better to start from scratch with lighter components and sell the 4770 as is to pay for them.
Take the horn out and install it in a frame. Cover the horn opening with a piece of 3/4 plywood. Flip the cabinet on it's head to keep the HF close to the mid output of the 15s. It will at least give you a chance to evaluate how well this will meet your goals.
