Spiky distortion on NAD with KSS213

On a used NAD C 521BEE, I hear spiky distortion (clicks) in the sound, and it becomes noticeable on higher tracks. It is obvious when playing music even from a factory CD, but to better diagnose the situation, I made a ten-track CDR with a 1000-hz sine wave on each track (each is track 444 seconds). With the CDR, the noise becomes noticeable around track 4, and worsens as tracks increase. The mech is a Sony KSS213CL

I replaced the laser (the original had a lousy eye pattern and had a similar problem). The new laser has an eye pattern that is a little fuzzy and jiggles a little, but compares well with some examples shown on this forum. I would call it good, but not excellent. It was not tack-sharp even before my adjustments.

I can see the clicks on a scope, but they are too fast to photograph. They show as a stepped-line that roughly parallels the 1-khz wave, with a higher amplitude (maybe 20% higher).

When I put in the new laser, I turned the laser current pot a little to see if the eye pattern would improve a little, and at one point (about a few seconds) I heard some clicking sounds, which I assume was a rapid focus movement. I quickly turned the pot back towards the center. Could I have ruined the laser having it too high for a few seconds?

There is no focus or tracking adjustments that I can see, and the service manual does not mention them.

Any ideas?
