Hello all! I need your advice - assistance if you can.
I bought a set of SPENDOR 7/1 Speakers for a song - and am trying to gauge my options to replace the Mid-range/Bass speaker on both sides which are not functioning properly.
This model is probably the least popular I've ever seen in the Spendor line - so I don't want to invest a lot of money in repairing the existing mids - if they are even salvageable. The mid is a proprietary speaker from Spendor - and I suspect is will be cost prohibitive to buy replacement drivers. I have reached out to Spendor and they directed me to Bluebird Music - the US rep for Spendor - who are not very responsive.
While I know replacing the driver with a non-Spendor driver may change the classic Spendor sound - I'm OK with that.
I've owned SP-100's, BC-1's and am waiting for the right deal to come along to keep me happy for the next 10 years. I suspect it will be Harbeth, Spendor or Linn when the time comes. Until then - I just need something to keep my ears in shape.
I am a newbie - and can handle the plug and play of driver replacement - but I want to make sure I select the correct substitute.
The Spendor has a ScanSpeak soft dome tweeter. (model -2010/8513)
Sensitivity is 88 8 ohms
Mid/Bass is an 8" (200mm with 40mm voice coil) Freq Resp. 60hz-20Khz
What are the important specs I need to have to assure the replacement is a technical match?

replacement - does Spendor use Bexetrene cones? - if so, perhaps the SB MFC range could come close...

Hi Pete - One is blown - probably will need voice coil work, and the other will need to be re-coned. Yes - Spendor does use what they describe as Homopolymer polypropylene driver.
Do I need to match any of the mid/woofer specs to the tweeter when searching?

Spencer and Dorothy Hughes = Spendor.
The Scanspeak D2010/8513 tweeter is fairly regular sort of 3/4" stuff: Scanspeak D2010/851300 Tweeter - Spendor 100 Naim ProAc Replacement
But for the bass driver, I'd ring Spendor. 200 mm sounds a bit bespoke to me.

You could look at getting the drivers repaired.
Looking at older type of drivers you may start to look at SEAS CA22RNY, CA22RNX or Scan Speak P21WO20 to see if the dimensions fit. Be a miracle if they would work in the original design but odd things happen.
Maybe if you give some driver dimensions it may jog someones memory.

Gerard, we are up for this! Only question mark is the speaker rebate size which you quote at 200mm.
The Vifa P21W0-20-08 Woofer is a smooth 215mm reflex driver on a 186.5mm cutout and seems to have a rubber dustcap. But not a show-stopper, IMO.
I know this sort of speaker, here a Wharfedale Shelton XP2:
The crossover was this, but there are endless ways to do it:

A terrific speaker. One of the best two ways I have ever heard.

Apparently Wilmslow once recommended the VIFA C20WJ-19-08 as a replacement, but that's obsolete (& the sensitivity doesn't match).....

Vintages are very expensive also because of their quality. Is like going for a new project without the same drivers. More expensive because of new crossovers/project & parts/measuring/testing/time & money. You can always try the used market:

Had a couple of sp7/1 for a while.
The rubber surrounds became stiff as h..... Sounded dreadful.
Used dot4 brake fluid to soften them and sound became alot better.
Drivers look very cheap, but speakers are decent sounding when working ok.

This speaker is not Rocket Science! Let's wait for Gerard's comments on driver size.

I was very kindly referred to a speaker MASTER outside of Philadelphia that is a whiz with Spendor speakers. He offered to rebuild them for me for a very reasonable fee. I will report back to you - and let you know the results.
