Literally.

Just for fun I put a couple 12" coax's on stands with 4x18" woofers crossed at 300hz. Easily fills the yard with very clean high impact sound. I expected the high crossover and distance to create more problems than it does. It's not optimal but as is it sounds very good. Eventually they'll go in boxes and cross an octave lower.

Cool.
I've wondered about running subs into the hundreds of Hz for PA use - certainly makes the top cabinets smaller.

If you want more lower mid out of the 12"s, I've found just putting poly fill around the back side, taped into place, absorbs quite a bit of the rear-side lower mid, giving more forward output.

I usually have a stack of ultratouch behind the 12's. Definitely helps with low mids and keeping sound off the back wall.

I have a pair of very efficient 18 Sound mid bass drivers that should help a great deal for low mid headroom. They're considerably louder and handle more long-term power than the coax's. Should be a potent little 2x12 top.

Large format compression drivers are the way to go. There's very little compromise to my ears.
