I had forgotten those, they were flexible and high amperage. Drill motors, sanders, mixers and etc. were probable more flexible due to rubber insulation on stranded conductors enclosed in a round sheath rather than plastic zip cord.
My mistake. I meant lower Qts drivers can be helped with series R. Thanks for catching that.
I have seen a pro woofer that was too low of Qts, they add huge series power resistors in series strapped to the basket and then connected to terminals. It had too large of a magnet I guess. Seems cheaper to use smaller magnet but maybe they had too many already on hand.

Yeah it's sometimes done, usually as a band-aid when you can't modify the driver characteristics for one reason or another, such as the one you suggest. If but some knew, 😉 I've used variations on the theme myself for one reason or another, including in a couple of commercial projects. I'd rather not, obviously, as it's brute-force engineering, but it's viable enough if done well.

Off topic but I used to come up with some weird series/parallel combinations to get a value or wattage from junk box resistors.
FWIW, the pioneers used auto-formers and even then sometimes added a small series resistor during the transition years from ~matching impedance [low DF] to [super] low output impedance [high DF] amps.
