speaker stand

what should I know for making a speakers stand?
there are a lots of people fill their speakers stands with sand.
why aren't they use concrete stand or stack of bricks instead?

It really does not matter. Sand is easy and fills the space.

Concrete blocks were just easier for me but I see why they might want to use sand as tvrgeek says.
