Speaker recone / test tone?

Doing a speaker recone for the first time, have the new surround on and ready to glue to the outside frame but of course want to make sure its centered.

It seems, and I imagine this usually the case that it "naturally" wants to be centered when you don't touch it. So I guess I could mark it like that.

Don't want to take off the dust cap and do it the hard way but I was wondering about this --

What if I were to give the speaker a low volume test tone 1K or so, while I glue it? Would the voice coil fall in place because of the magnetic field?

By the way, reconing a pair of design acoustic 6" 2 way -- great speakers I think -- thanks Goodwill.

The first pair of speakers I refoamed were some old AR18 8" drivers. The voice coil gap was so big that I didn't need to remove the dust cap. With my current Vifa drivers, the gap in very narrow. I cut the dust cap off and used printer paper as shims to centre the voice coil.

As long as you have a sharp knife, cutting the dust cap off is no problem.

If you need to cut the dust cap off, don't cut too deep or you might cut through the voice coil wires, cones don't necessarily centre themselves, if you need more info just have a look at some of the youtube videos done by the businesses that sell the surrounds. good luck ..
