thx sippy. Too far from Cornwall yes. Something will get sorted before the next village carnival which isn't until late August. The pity is there's not much help in doing these things until the very day of the event which is too late...i found myself running around with our house hifi trying to get it to work with an inverter to no avail...
PS v kind offer. thanks.

I'm a joiner so making the boxes isn't going to be a problem. I have loads of MDF and ply lying around.
you mention a 'cheap $6 CD and built in plastic horn' Any chance you can show a picture/link to one so I know what I'm looking for.
Along with my son James we made this... http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/255927-tl-boombox-tribute-act.html which is now finished and sounds great. Tripath 15w per channel module from ebay.
It's bluetooth and runs of 8 AA batteries and what I'd like to do is just double it in size and power and that would do the trick. It wouldn't be the full power PA but would be enough for our small village carnival...
Look for a Pyle PH44 CD with horn. Here is one site that sells it for under $6. It will be key to find a place close by to keep shipping low. I got mine as part of larger order of other stuff from Amazon and got free shipping.
Pyle PylePro PH44 Tweeter - 100 W RMS - 1 Pack
Here is a link to the typical 12 in woofer I was thinking of for $15 ea:
MCM Audio Select 12" Woofer with Poly Cone and Rubber Surround 120W RMS at 8ohm | 55-2973 (552973) | MCM Audio Select
You might even be able to do a vented box for this as it has a Qts in mid 0.4's for some deeper bass. This one is rated at 91 dB so you will have 97 dB sensitive at 2.83 volts. Not bad for $30 worth of drivers.
For the amp I was thinking of something like this for the woofers:
2x250W IRS2092 Class-D Amplifier Board
You can order something like this straight from Yuan Jing's website and shipping will be less than getting it from USA.
For the CD tops I would go with the 50 w/ch Yuan Ying TPA3116D2 for $20.
Yuan Jing Audio - ON SALE! - TPA3116 Class-D 2.0 Stereo Amplifier Board [50W+50W] - $19.99
It sounds like your requirements are much more modest though. Check out the mini Karlsonator thread. Find a suitable moderate Qts 12 in driver and build a full size Karlsonator 12. Couple it with the CD and horn on top. The Karlsonator has very nice 40 Hz bass with great efficiency and wide polar dispersion.
adri,
You say your a chippie and have wood (Oooo-Errrrr😀 ).....
This is what I'd build:http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/179161-beta-12lta-3cf-box-port-size.html
You'll be interested in the 12Lta enclosure..... 'JKRO' had big fun for a while (he still does, we beta built / tested a box design for a Vendor on / doyen of these forums)
Eminence Beta 12Lta cost about £120 to your door:PAIR PACK (x2) Eminence BETA 12LT 8ohm 12 225watt Twin Cone : Lean Business, Outstanding Audio, Bass Guitar Speakers, Celestion Guitar Speakers, Guitar Amps, Tayden Guitar Speakers, Pro PA Speakers, Celstion spares, Celstion Vintage 30 and more!
I have this driver in a slightly more fancy cabinet (my PA speakers also do Domestic) and this time of year they get plenty of BBQ invites.
Your Welcome and I hope this info helps

Hi all.
This is what I built with my son James. It's a smaller cabinet version of
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/148807-transmissionline-ipod-docking-station.html
This uses a Tripath 15w per channel module bought off ebay and will run for a good while on a 8xAA battery pack. Nice and loud.
What I'd like to do is make a bigger more powerful version of the same. Not sure if the Eminence Beta 12Lta are the right choice but if anyone can suggest components for a combination which would basically double or triple the power of the one we built the suggestions would be most welcome. Ideally I'd like it to run off an 8 pack of D size batteries.
Not sure if you can get a 50w tripath but something like that would do with appropriate speakers.
Many thanks for the help.
Adri

Found a 50w Tripath module on ebay. TK2050. Can anyone suggest a pair of full range speakers that would match that amp?

I second the Beta12LTA suggestion, but considering where you live.
Buying into the local brand might save you some cash...

There's £6 difference in price from ebay.
Would either of these go well with the TK2050?

Where did you get that notion from? This one is rated at 91 dB so you will have 97 dB sensitive at 2.83 volts.
91 dB 1W 1M is 91 dB 2.83V 1M for 8 ohm speakers. (exactly the same)
Where do you pull that 6 dB extra sensitivity from?
Define "a good while" .This uses a Tripath 15w per channel module bought off ebay and will run for a good while on a 8xAA battery pack. Nice and loud.
Specially full throttle under Carnival conditions.
And we are talking puny 15W here.
No way 🙁What I'd like to do is make a bigger more powerful version of the same..... basically double or triple the power of the one we built ..... Ideally I'd like it to run off an 8 pack of D size batteries.
The Tripath 2050, which can put about 45W RMS before clipping into an 8 ohm speaker (a 4 ohm load exceeds its current limit) , REQUIRES a +30V supply. Not sure if you can get a 50w tripath but something like that would do with appropriate speakers ...... Found a 50w Tripath module on ebay. TK2050. Can anyone suggest a pair of full range speakers that would match that amp?
Just read the datasheet !!!!!!!
HTTP 301 This page has been moved <--click it anyway, it will open 😉
With puny 12V available from a car battery it will put out only 16W RMS ... and that into 4 ohms !!! (The lower supply voltage decreases current consumption too).
Into an 8 ohms speaker it will provide around 9W RMS or so.
You can´t beat physics laws and with 12V you simply do not have enough peak voltage available.
If you want power and don´t want to carry *real* amplification and a generator, at least use a couple good car batteries and use a car power amp with internal switching converters, which make their own high voltage rails (say 24+24V to 50+50V)
Anything else is dreaming and wasting your money, even under the lighter constraints of a small town parade.
There must be some reason for "the next float drowning you with their 200W system" as you mentioned.
double or triple the power
Double the power is only 3dB louder (hardly noticeable). If you mean double the apparent loudness, you need ten times the power, so your 15W goes to 150W which is in the ballpark of what you need.
HTH,
Brian
