Most studies have indicated that it's not an issue whether you build them separately or together, as far as performance is concerned. I'd build them separate for a couple reasons. The separator is going to act as a shelf brace, there will be less concern with box modes as the (likely vertical) 1 dimension will be halved, making a higher frequency resonance that's more easily damped, and also, in a failure situation, you'll have more airspring protection on the remaining driver if one blows.
