Speaker driver with high MMS for low frequencies ?

Hello,

Does it make sense to build a woofer in such a way that it has a relatively high mms in order to get a very low frequency response? Especially when you build a multway system and the woofer is only responsible for the really low frequencies. or would you advise me against it?

Smaller subwoofers usually take advantages from a very high mass cone to get the bass extension of a larger cone. A wide Xmax is a must as well.
Usually this results in a low efficiency speaker. Think about the Dayton Audio Ultimax subwoofers or Tangband's W6-1139SIF.

With that being said, I'd usually prefer a bigger, more efficient speaker with higher max SPL rather than a very compact subwoofer, however it really depends on the single speaker being used.
