A. 103db sensitivity, with waveguide 107db (optional).

The waveguide screws up the flattness of the freq response.

Using a crowbar to pry it apart didn't
work - LOL I become very intimate with the inner workings
of this driver after the screwdriver slipped one day when I was
checking internals (measuring, figuring out how to reroute
the electrical) and the diaphram ripped when the magnet
pulled the small screwdriver from the screw

Their rep was telling me screwdriver stories. Anything magnetic in the precense of the field is dangerous. And i suspect that the only magnetic shielding that will have significant effect is to keep them 3 m from your TV.

Ok here are the nosecones
The model number usually relates to the tube diameter (mm for Estes) They are hollow so would need filling with goop of some sort.

Scroll down a bit on the page:
http://www.hobbylinc.com/rockets/prods/tfa.htm

More expensive but can be huge! I think the models correspond to diameter in inches:

The worst web site I have seen to date-no ****:

http://www.estesrockets.com/

A friend mentions that the PHL concentrics don't sound so good.
That's enough for me! back to the Fostex's
The larger PHL woofers do seem to have models with holes in the middle for a horn tweeter. Gives you a nice sturdy place to mount a regular tweet even if you don't want to use a horn.

Hi skaara

A recent speaker I've built was using JBL drivers:

LF: JBL 2206 a modern 12" P.A. driver with medium efficiency (95 dB/Watt/m) using a paper/fiberglass composite cone. It doesn't have very good capabilities at the lower end (i.e. an fs of 50 Hz)so I used special tunig + EQ, obtaining a -3dB cutoff frequency of 40 Hz.

HF: 2344 horn with 2426 compression driver. As far as I know, the horn isn't available as new anymore. It was the horn used for the 4430 and 4435 studio monitors. Being a constant directivity horn (the directivity thing is really astonishing, i.e. JBL definitely DID their homework) it needs some equalising above approx 4.5 kHz to achieve flat amplitude response.

The sound of this speaker is very dynamic and never stressed (at least not at the levels I listen to nowadays) and in no way harsh.

In the German magazine "Klang & Ton" some P.A. drivers by Beyma (Spain) and B&C (Italy) achieved very good test results (i.e. with Hifi in mind !).
I don't know for sure but I think I once heard that the Danish highend hornspeaker manufacturer Dynavox is using Beyma drivers.

Regards

Charles

--Are you talking about eight SA compact drivers PER SIDE

I wish - hehe

I have to settle for 4 per side due to driver cost.
This is what I'm trying to build - lol

I'm not going to use the waveguide, sacrifice some spl
for sq.

When I was working with the tweeter about 1m away from
the computer monitor, the magnet was tweaking out my
monitor making nice rainbow patterns.. - hehe

I'm going to try two layers of MuShield, 10 mil thick foil.
One layer inside the custom aluminum enclosure I'm
building and then another layer inside the tweeter chamber.
We shall see if I can supress the magnetic field. Everything
is all experimental with this project.

Not long enuff to be a line array, and too long to be a point source -- things could get confusing. Should play damn loud. A couple nice little 2-4 W tube amps for the mid & top, and some honking big SS amps for the bottoms to even give them a chance to keep up with the mids & tops.

John from stryke said he build some line arrays
and my small array should not give me big comb filtering
problems like the big boy arrays. "We shall see
Mr. Frodo".

I like your suggestion for running tube on top
and SS on bottom, another plus when using 103db
tweeters and 100db midranges. But, during tests
with ADCOM 555II bridged for 600W running one
PHL 2520 midrange, the impact of the music is
pretty awesome, expecially jazz tunes, drum solos,
etc. The only thing better would be 10 or 12 inch
prosound midranges, but then I open up another
can of worms going large diameter midrange. I chose
8" as max size so I had little choices when picking
high sen. drivers. I'm always open to suggestions, I lost
count on how many times I revised my plans - lol

But, I do wish to make a full line array someday
with perhaps the newform ribbons, the 92db sens
ones with 5" or 6" seas excel... whatdya think?

The ATC mid is pretty well thought of it seems-is it a dome?
The Stage Accompany is also famous on the web
I can't figure out who in the U.S. sells either one of them.
Can you give us a clue?

Here's a speaker that uses it I've found:

http://www.audiodesignguide.com/ba/
scroll to the bottom- It's the Apocalypse
The drivers he uses are hard to argue with from what i've read.

I love this driver!!! :hbeat:

This is the new Fostex 208 due in the U.S. next year.
It is available in Japan so some people have gotten in the US by importing them. Has anyone heard them? They haveall kinds of stuff to impress this naive viewer: Tremendously huge magnets, ribs in the banana fiber cone, the central whizzer dome instead of cone- no resonating edges, surround with grooves to also deal with resonances there I can even imagine I'm seeing an elastomer to decouple the cone and dome! :hbeat: :hbeat:

Price rumored to be around $350 ea. :bawling:
I'll start saving now!! At the rate my bass box is going they might be available in the US by the time I'm ready for them!

Now I'll try the atttach....

Re: compression driver

Hello I'm new here, so please forgive me if I ask questions that have been covered.

- How's the ALE or GOTO compression drivers compare to the TAD 4000 series, in terms of realism and other sound qualities?
TADs are expesnsive. ALE/Goto are uber-expensive so few will have had any meaningful comparisons between them, especially as they'll most likely require different flares etc to optimise performance.
