Hi to all.
This is my first time on here and i have read a few posts about speaker building, but i dont understand the terminology. I would just like to say thank you for taking the time to read my post. I am a complete newbie to the diy arena. I just wanted to know if some one could help me to learn how to build a set of loudspeakers. I have always loved music and have had a couple of nice systems, (well what i thought was nice until i heard some real systems playing). The last seven years has seen me without a stereo, (had to sell my last one to get a car....doh). So i now have another stereo, but would like to have a go at building some speakers as the ones that i like are way to exspensive, (jm lab alto utopia was the ones i heard). My system is musical fidelity A3.2 pre power combo and matching cd player (just running some old speakers of a friend). I have been reading a lot on the net and have seen some great designs that i imagine would sound great, but was looking for somewhere to turn when i need help. I have been looking at the scanspeak drivers, 21w/8555-01 bass, 18w/8545-00 mid, d2905/9700 tweeter. Would like help to build a set of speakers using these drivers if possible, (sorry for rambling on so much, i just have heaps of things to learn). Well i hope to hear from some one soon and i will keep trying to pickup as much as i can from reading this forum. Its great to see so many people getting into diy audio, i had no idea that there was so much around.
will c you round hopefully🙂

Oz,
I built my first speakers last years: ProAc 2.5. It was easy. Liked it so much I built a second pair using the ScanSpeak 95000 tweeter.
See these two sites:
http://www.geocities.com/diyproac25/
and the following site for the excellent paper of Troels:

I did my first pair using the part of paper called Version without notch filter. My second pair was using the ScanSpeak 95000. I did not made the modifications to the woofer or tweeter. Everyone who listened to these speakers was astounded by the quality.

Clones look great
Your cabinets look great. I was wondering exactly how you went about recessing the speaker (flush mount). Did you use a router? What bit did you use if so? How did you make it a perfect circle? Was it done freeheand? Also, is there anyone that sells these crossovers already made? Thanks.

These are the pictures of Troels' speakers. In mine, I did not use bracing like in the original ProAc.
The trick to recess speakers is to make a plastic base like a tremel for a router. I made (by trial and errors) holes to use as an axis around which to turn the router to make perfect circles. You make first the recess, than you make the rest of the hole for the speaker. But leave supporting material and cut the rest with a small saw.

Thanks mrs y for moving that for me🙂
Hi Alain & sound quest. You've done a nice job of those speakers there Alain. Good to know that with a bit of effort and some good guidance you can get a nice set of tunes flowing from your boxs.
Thats why i became a member here was to meet people that havent done a lot of this sort of stuff before, and to meet people that have so i can learn a bit about it myself. I am totaly electronics deficent as i haven't had any thing to do with them before. i have been reading as much as i can, and am learning quite a lot, (but the more i learn the less i know). I am realy looking forward to building a set for home. I was thinking about a three way setup, but it seems pretty complicated to get everything right. So i am swayed to go with a two way just to get started, (but love the fullness of the threeway). I was looking at scanspeak drivers. Iwas thinking about using the 18w/8545 k mid range, (as i have read that it has a better bass response than the 18w/8545-00 for a two way set up) and the d2905/9700 tweeter. I am not sure how to calculate the enclosure size and if these two intergrate well together. Any help or sugesstions would be much appreciatd.
regard,
oz
ps. Thanks for the input, its encouraging to see whats goin on out there and what sort of results can be achieved😉
