Spawn Olson/Nagaoka Horns the Next Generation

If folks are interested, I've just finished a pair of Kirishimas (see also this thread).

Have got some Lowther PM6As in them and they sound good to me.

Built from 18mm OSB, with a slight deviation from the standard design in that I've added a curve to the horn mouths.

Yes they are quite imposing in height but actually the footprint is not so big. You can see that I have kind of built them into a wall anyway.

As for the bass, it only goes down so far but I do feel it's good quality, more so than any other speakers I've owned. I think possibly the shape of my room and the position of the speakers and my main listening position help to strengthen it.

My tests (not completely scientific, just based on listening to a tone generator) suggest the bass is pretty solid down to about 50 or 60HZ after which it tails off (at some point between 30 and 40HZ it disappears).

In terms of actual listening (and I do listen to a fair amount of bass-heavy music), so far I wouldn't say that it feels like bass is "missing" - rather, what's there sounds very full and solid.

At some point I might experiment with combining with a sub but I don't feel any urgency to do that at the moment.

Hi Guys!
I have never built speakers before but I have a pair of enabled Fostex FX120`s,and would like to build a set of rear- loaded horns for them.
Would they work in a set of kongos?
I am very eager to build these, hopefully they will work without changes.

Hi guys,

I FE103En home, his sound'm excited. Now I would like to make a bigger enclosure with FE206En ... the only reason they are deeper bass, which of course get 103. I do not laborovat with a combination of 103 and a subwoofer, I would like bass from one drive ... and now to what we read here in the forum. Repeatedly, there are opinions that it is good to add to larger drives as FE167,206 subwoofer.

I had the opportunity to hear any other FOSTEX than 103 .. I think 206 is really not able to play lower frequency? (I mean 40-50Hz)

I really like the baffle Kirishima, I would like to build it. Do you think it's the right choice?

Do you think that another box will play lower bass than Kirishima?

Thank you for your comments and advice are very moving further with you.

Peter

Good point. 😱 I was thinking mainly in terms of the usual crop of drivers around now (like the 206) where Fh tends to be fairly high without a lot of help from the amp. With that limit removed, we're good to rock. :devilr:

:Edit: and size, of course. Not that that bothers me over-much. 😉

Yeah, just like then, one ideally needs it to be a two way, though there are still some inexpensive ~'FR' drivers that should work, but Fs would be high enough that these would be power limited to 'flea' power, though still plenty loud enough to satisfy most folks if corner loaded; or not, if in an attached dwelling where neighbors could/would complain about deep rumblings.

Thanks for the feedback, I determined that I use Fe206. At this point, I do not care only about the selection of the appropriate box. Kirishima I really like a lot, but I do not know how you will like my wife 🙂

If the box was smaller, it would be nice, but you can not cheat physics 🙂

Furthermore, I still thought the Half Chang or Chang, but I have no idea what can be the difference in sound.

Hi Guys,

Fe206 are on their way to me. I have a question for the construction of Kirishima. Can I put a speaker outside the vertical axis of the piece? I ask why, because it will be easier if complement tweeter FT17H.

Another question I have for compensation. If you use it, what type and what values?

Thank you for your response.
Peter

Of course, this is assuming that the 206 really needs a tweeter - it's been quite a while since I heard a pair - either the stock 206E or the ESR version.

To be quite honest, they weren't lacking enough top end for me that would have found a tweeter necessary - from what I can recall of the 207E, yes - but certainly, YMMV

As in offset the driver from the vertical centreline? Sure, if you wish. It shouldn't make any functional difference as far as the horn itself is concerned, although be careful with sidewall reflections.

As for partnering a tweeter with the 206, that driver isn't lacking for HF output per se (up to about 16KHz - 17KHz at any rate), although the qualitative aspect is another matter, which may be where a tweeter would come in -you'd need to roll the top of the 206 off a little though to do it right, unless the interaction between widebander & tweeter fortuitously smoothed things out through their interference which isn't unknown, but somewhat in the lap of the gods. If I were to use a tweeter with the 206, I'd be inclined to offset it, rather than the main driver, mirror-imaged of course, as Chris suggests.
