SOZ < 1 watt possible ?
Hello,
It is noce to find this nice forum. I ust registered, to begin with this question. Is it possible to make SOZ of even lower than 5 watt power? I have this over 105dB system and will be happy nto try SOZ to my speaker. From my experience even 200mW tube SET amp is sufficient.
I once built 5watts SOZ, but without BOSOZ so I tried the direct balace out fromthe CDP with volume control (I know this is not right..) and was amazed.. but then SOZ was problematic with heat ( small heatsinks).
I am not a electronic engineer so any advice, regardless of the possiblibity of the subject, is welcome.

Try hooking the speakers directly to the THS4131 (from www.ti.com) fully balanced op-amp from TI. Make sure you select the DGN package and attach the heatsink pad (requires oven) which will give the package a power dissipation of over 2W. If you have normal impedance speakers (less than about 10-15 ohms), this op-amp should be able to drive them!
As far as your question, it is of course possible to make lower power units. The advantage of doing so is that you can use smaller (better performing) devices. Various Zetex MOSFETs such as 3310 have been proposed for alternative duty and would likely work well for you. You may in fact even consider looking at pre-amp circuits as your question really is more of a "how can I get a good pre-amp that can drive my speakers directly ...." question. Various circuits are avaialable in the public domain (Nelson Pass has several service manuals and as you no doubdt know various pre-amp kits).
It would be interesting to hear your findings.

OK it is possible..
So just like the original SOZ article, the minimum is 5 watts from the given circuit? I want to try the balanced output of tube pre amp(using output transformer) into SOZ.. must be good.
Using the BOSOZ circuit to drive speaker? What happen if I remove the capacitor and connect speaker direct ?

from http://www.passdiy.com/legacy.htmSon of Zen has been designed scalable, and can be built with an output from one to fifty watts without any change in the schematic of the amplifier itself."
leave out C1 and C2 ?in my understanding there should happen not much, maybe a DC offset if not perectly matched devices. It is same as SoZ that way. also all the parts behing C1/C2 i would leave away.
So, prepare a BOSOZ without output cap..
using it as a power amp configuration, then and put some balanced line source, from a tube linestage with transformer that gives balanced output, is it worhty of trying?
Regardless of the output level from this BOSOZ to drive speaker load, maybe there will not be signinficant distortion(from my expreience of SOZ)? Hmmm somebody give me some tips please.
