hi all, been looking around to see if I could find something similar to what YWH has in terms of light source. here is what I found:
HQI (double ended) metal halide bulb
socket for the HQI (deluxe, other types found here too)
also from same place, an electronic ballast (quieter) but they also have a magnetic ballast for a bit cheaper:
electronic ballast cheaper ballast
read a bit more on this type of light and seems that the HQI bulb needs a M81 ANSI-coded ballast. does anybody know of a good source for these ballast in the US? I mean, the bulbs and sockets are pretty nicely priced, but the ballasts I've seen kinda kill the deal. anybody has this info?
now all we need to find is a place that has tha spherical reflector....

Excellent!!!
This is exactly what I've been looking for as I'm going to be switching over to a double-ended system. Does anyone know the average life of these bulbs? Also, is 150w enough? I'm tempted to go for the 250w bulb\ballast. Thanks for saving me some surfing time Abalone!!

Lamps and ballasts also here:

Wonder where in Europe I could find these parts?

How about this kit: 400w Remote Ballast Gro-lite . Less than 200 € for complete 400W system with two lamps....

This lamp is a "high pressure sodium" lamp....very "RED" in colour temp...I wouldn't use this lamp.

Not for me. if you look at the title you would know people in this thread are looking for small metal halide lamps, or 'point/dot light source' .

"now all we need to find is a place that has tha spherical reflector...."
YWH had one for sale.

the way I see it, smaller bulb = less heat=closer to lcd=less light loss (provided you still use a proper reflector and optics) so the "lower" lumen output the bulb puts out (9300 lumens I think) should be adequate. I also found HQI bulbs in Topbulb.com, a bit more expensive, but one has a 10000 hour life and good kevlin color temperature here:
top bulb HQI
so 9500 lumens x 0.75 (reflector efficiency)= 7125 useful lumens x 0.15 (lcd transmittance)=1068.75 ANSI lumens x 0.75 (optical perfomance, I expect to lose at most 1/4 of the transmitted light from the panel to the final projector lens) =801 final ANSI lumen output.
so it may be well worth looking into these. all the numbers are theoretical, but pretty sound to what real world parameters dictate.
